Since our last half yearly meeting we have lost

in death a number o f our colleagues. May they rest

in peace, and may the Eternal Light shine upon them.

Mr. Travers Wolfe was President o f the Society

in 1940-41. He was one o f the most striking per

sonalities o f his time. He will long be remembered

not merely for his public and professional work

but as an outstanding figure.

We are all happy to know that Mr. Roger Greene,

our last years President has continued to make

good progress towards recovery after a long and

painful illness. The Society remains grateful to

him for all that he accomplished for us.

The outstanding event o f my year o f office was

o f course the Centenary Celebration. It will remain

a precious memory to all o f us. The memory of

the Reception in the Four Courts, the Garden Party

in the Phoenix Park, the great Dinner, will always

stay with those o f us who were present. Neither

will the many ldndnesses we received, from the

President o f Ireland and his wife, the Chief Justice

and the Judiciary, the Lord Mayor and Corporation,

and from so many others, be soon forgotten. It

was a particular pleasure to have with us the repre

sentatives of the Law Societies o f England, Scotland

and Northern Ireland. One o f the pleasant con

sequences has been to establish closer relations with

each o f these. Each has reciprocated with invita

tions to their Dinners.

I hope that the Souvenir Book which the Council

has prepared will shortly be published. It will be

a valuable record, and will contain many photo

graphs which we would all like to keep.

I want once again to offer thanks to all who

helped to make these things possible. In particular

I want to thank again Mr. Eric Plunkett upon

whom the heaviest burden fell, our Vice-Presidents,

Mr. Quirke, and indeed all the members o f the

Council, and many more outside it, for what they

did. I am glad to say that our apprentices did

more than their share. Without them the various

functions could not have been organized as they

were.

During the year the Council has not relaxed its

efforts to advance the Solicitors Bill. A t my entry

into office I ventured to prophesy that it would

probably be introduced in the reign o f one o f my

successors.

It is rather disappointing that

not withstanding the expressed approval by the

Ministers o f Justice o f both Governments, it should

have already taken some twelve years to get even
