whose death on August

28th has been lamented by a wide circle o f friends,

was a remarkable and, indeed, unique personality.

Born in Skibbereen County Cork in the year 1872

and educated at Bishop s School in his native town,

he became in due course a brilliant law student

gaining first place, a gold medal, and the coveted

Findlater Scholarship in his Final examination. In

1893 he set up practice as a solicitor at Skibbereen

and soon enjoyed a large and lucrative practice.

He was later appointed solicitor to several local

bodies and in 1916 became Crown Solicitor for the

West ^Riding o f Cork. The times were “ out o f

joint ” and the appointment no sinecure, but the

new Crown Solicitor fulfilled his difficult, and often

dangerous,^ duties with courage and fairness but

without fear or favour.” In after years he publicly

declared that he had the honour and privilege o f

being three times sentenced to death, but that

peculiarly enough his three would-be executioners

subsequently became his warmest friends. Those

who knew Jasper’s character and charm can well
