GAZETTE

JULY/AUGU

ST1985

A general misconception prevails among young

students especially those who have not yet touched on

conveyancing that succession prior to the Succession Act

1965 is of historic interest only. It is well, therefore, that

intestate succession to Realty and Personalty prior to

1967 is covered to a fair extent in Chapter 12.

The subjects of the four Chapters in Part 4 — Licences,

Servitudes, Covenants and Security, compress an amount

of law into a readable and understandable exposition.

However, in Section 25 of Chapter 18, the statement to

the effect that a prior registered mortgage may not take

priority over a subsequent unregisterable one demands an

explanation or an instance of the rare circumstances

where this might occur.

Subject to the points made above being dealt with in an

errata/addenda sheet, this book would serve as a useful

primer for Law Students preparing for academic or

professional examinations. However, Law Students

would be ill-advised to treat it as a substitute for Wylie.

The book will be welcomed particularly by students of

courses for Auctioneers', Surveyors', Bankers' and

Building Societies Officials' Institutes'examinations and

in addition should prove an eminently readable book for

the interested layman.

The marathon task of writing a book for students on

the basic concepts of Land Law under the constraint of

space must not be underestimated. It is a useful addition

to the expanding collection of Irish Law Texts.
