Lighting up Hunger ford
with song and a jockey
NEVER let it be said that
Hungerford town does not
know how to do Christmas.
A Christmas Fayre will be held
at St Lawrence Church in
Hungerford on Saturday,
November 19, from 10am to 2pm.
There will be cards, cakes, toys,
bric-a-brac, a tombola and a
whisky draw. Father Christmas
is also scheduled to put in an
appearance.
Those famous Christmas lights
will be switched on this year at
6pm on Saturday, November 27,
by legendary jockey AP McCoy
And this year also marks the
25th anniversary of the famous
Victorian extravaganza on
Friday, December 9.
Set against the glorious
backdrop of the region’s best
Christmas lights, the town is
transformed into a wonderland
of delights; the High Street is
filled with side shows, a helter
skelter, big wheel, steam engines,
fairground organs and rides.
Pedestrian barriers go up, huge
lorries arrive with all the
equipment and shopkeepers
make last minute adjustments to
seasonal window displays.
At 5pm the official opening takes
place, brass bands play and a
Victorian barrel organ brings
the evening to life.
Punch and Judy shows, stilt
walkers, clowns, juggler and, for
the children, Father Christmas.
The shops will be open with their
staff in Victorian dress, some
giving out mulled wine and
mince pies and at 7pm the Grand
Parade comes up the High Street.
