beware of putting
up images that can
affect their careers.
Once a student is in college, the monitor-
ing continues. A study by University of Mary-
land’s Student Press Law Center found that
more than 50 top universities have policies to
monitor social media and keep an eye on their
student-athletes. Some schools have policies
in place that punish students for posting of-
fensive or inappropriate information. Associ-
ate athletic director Felicia Martin of Texas
Tech told the Maryland reporters, “We totally
respect students’ personal media presence.
We respect that. We don’t say: ‘Don’t have
Twitter. Don’t have Facebook. Don’t do Insta-
gram,’ What we say is: ‘Be responsible.’”
