ONSIDERED together, compounds, coverings, and extrusion machinery
provide a striking example of the efficiency of modern wire making.
The insulation or coating material is applied at the intake of the extruder
and perfectly covers the wire or cable. Multilayer coatings do not call for
an interruption of the process but only for the addition of a grounding
and shielding step. Colour-code strips for electrical wiring are handily
accommodated by the equipment.
Not even the extraordinary requirements of the global energy industry
present an unyielding challenge to a wire maker practiced in the use
of compounds for high-voltage and flame-retardant applications. In a
state-of-the-art wire mill, a cable with an inner insulating layer and an
oil-resistant outer layer is just another product in an exacting category.
A model of efficiency, it has much in common with the group of three under
review here.
