Unitek Crossheads, represented in North

America by Howar Equipment Inc, has

had great success with its new UXH0710

series of fixed centre crossheads on fibre

optic cable insulating and jacketing

requirements.

The crossheads can be used for single

layer, stripe or skin layer insulation.

Benefits include:

• Short head lengths for easy set-up

• Extremely durable material

• Small diameter for even heat

• Precise and few parts yield highest

concentricity

• Few tooling change steps

The simple, compact design of the

UXH0710 series is suitable for insulating

extremely flexible fibre-optic cables

and fibres. The short length of the head

makes the set-up and feeding in of cable/

fibre easy for the operator.

Once assembled, the fixed centred head

will immediately run a highly concentric

product since there is no further operator

intervention and adjustment needed.

Gum space can be adjusted on the fly at

the exit side of the crosshead.

Tooling is extracted in three steps from

the exit side of the crosshead without

needing to remove any heaters.

The new head design is based off a

proven flow technology implemented

on its fluoro-polymer heads, and tested

in collaboration with some worldwide

customers requesting smaller sized

heads, which are more user-friendly when

doing tooling changes.

The fixed centre crosshead allows for a

repeatable, immediate concentric start

up which drastically reduces scrap and

over insulation. A common, single head

design means fewer components to the

crosshead and a smaller spare parts list.

The combination of extreme small inner

volumes and the free flow technology

approach is good for quick colour

changes and reduced downtime.

The smaller inner volume minimises

resonance time in the crosshead and

is a perfect choice for smaller gauge

conductors as well as solid or foamed

insulations. A larger, 13mm (0.512") bore

reduces melt pressure, allowing faster

line speeds at lower pressures.

The UXH0710 series is capable of

processing conductors up to 7mm

(0.275") in diameter and an insulated

diameter up to 10.5mm (0.413").
