Mica substitute is a liquid elastomeric
water coating that forms a non-blocking
film over the insulation. It replaces dry
powders such as mica and talc that are
dusted on surfaces to prevent blocking.
Powders are classified as dust nuisances
and can also cause accidents when spilled
on the floor.
Mica and talc substitute are in compliance
with a number of directives.
Unlike
a
competitive
anti-blocking
product, a soap solution that causes
blistering, mica substitute will not behave
in the same manner. It is a turn film
former that encapsulates the insulation
and will prevent sticking inside the jacket,
the CV line or other areas of blocking
concern.
Various insulations that it has been used
on include PVC to PVC, hypalon, crosslink,
TPR and CPE. It is also used as a bond
separator between hypalon and XLPE in
the mould during the baking cycle.
Mica substitute must form a film before
reaching the rake up reel. Surface
temperature should reach 212ºF to
initiate the cure process. On twisted
construction it is suggested that the
singles be protected with mica substitute
prior to twisting.

S&E Specialty Polymers LLC, a producer of speciality plastic compounds, has introduced
a new family of TufFill™ non-halogen TPO compounds primarily designed for use in
the wire and cable market. The new polyolefin based TufFill™ NH GTPO 8291 IT family
features a wide range of unique properties including:
• Intumescent flame retardant – low-smoke zero-halogen material
• Highly flexible, durometer of 82 Shore “A” to 60 Shore “D”
• Temperature rated to 105°C
• 28-47 Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)
• Specific gravity of 0.94 – 1.08 for higher yields
• Good thermostability
• Low water absorption
S&E’s choice of new generation metallocene polymers as the backbone of these
materials allows easy control of flexibility without sacrificing FR and physical properties.
An intumescent FR additive allows for a wide range of LOIs for meeting stringent
UL requirements. “Our customers have asked us for a softer/more flexible low-smoke
zero-halogen with a 40+ Oxygen Index for specific applications and we’ve delivered,”
said Duane Shooltz, president and COO of S&E. “These compounds represent a
higher-end offering from S&E that will provide users with significant benefits.”
