The
func-
tion
of
this
cock
is
twofold
:
it
gives
access
to
the
air,
and
thus
prevents
the
dangers
from
absorption.
The
still
A
is
calculated
to
produce
168
pounds
of
steam
per
hour,
provided
it
be
supplied
with
boiling
water;
for
if
this
was
to
be
brought
to
ebullition
by
the
still
itself,
a
much
less
quantity
of
steam
would
be
formed.
It
con-
tains
230
litres
up
to
the
line
a,
and
306
up
to
h,
which
is
the
full
charge.
It
would
be
easy
to
supply
this
still
constantly
with
boiling
water;
this
might
be
done
by
placing
above
it
a
small
vessel
filled
with
water,
which
might
be
brought
to
ebullition
by
means
of
the
heat
which
escapes
from
the
first
still
:
a
great
economy
in
combustibles
mi^ht
thus
be
obtained.
