Court of Appeals has received submissions on this
proposed change to Section 520.9 of its Rules for the
Admission of Attorneys and Counsellors at Law. Its
decision could be made as early as September.
If any Irish solicitor or barrister wishes to avail of this
provision, they should do so immediately; if the change
is adopted, sitting the New York State Bar examination
would be uniformly required. There is no requirement
that one practise in New York at this time in order to
retain membership of the State Bar.
Enquiries should be made to:
State Board of Law Examiners,
90 State Street,
Albany,
New York 12207.
Yours sincerely,
Catherine Byrne,

Dear Editor,
German Language Courses for Lawyers
I have recently been making inquiries at the Goethe
Institute as to whether they would be willing to provide
a German language course for lawyers. In response, the
Director of Languages has advised me that they are
willing to provide such a course, subject to a sufficient
number of persons to constitute a viable class being
interested.
The type of course I would envisage would be one
designed to give participants a sufficient command of
German to enable them to understand and to translate
standard German legal documents, and in particular
letters received from German speaking persons.
Additionally, it would endeavour to give participants
the ability to respond to communications in German. I
am advised that these skills can be taught reasonably
quickly to persons with only a limited knowledge of the
language.
I would be obliged if anyone who would be interested
in such a course would contact the undersigned.
Yours sincerely,
Brendan Heneghan,
