LEADING THE FIELD

Hello and welcome to Kingspan Stadium, the home of Ulster Rugby. It is a pleasure for us to be here and particularly important to greet you during what we know is a busy and exciting time for rugby fans around the world. This evening’s game sees Ulster host Benetton Rugby Treviso and both teams will be hoping to display the depth of talent they possess with many players away on international duty. At Kingspan, as is the case with our partners Ulster Rugby, putting emphasis on the structures for talent development is a key factor in end of year success. Tonight’s Ulster team is an exciting mix of experience and new-comers, and we look forward to seeing the continued development of the latter in the success of this club. Tonight we are also proud to host the Ulster Rugby family night and encourage you all to make sure the younger supporters get involved in the fun before taking your seats.

On behalf of Kingspan, I would like to wish the squad and management of Ulster Rugby every success tonight, and for the month ahead.

OFFICERS Bobby Stewart // President John McKibbin // Senior Vice President Graffin Parke // Junior Vice President John McKibbin // Honorary Secretary Michael Boyd // Honorary Treasurer Denis Gardiner // Competitions Secretary EXECUTIVE TEAM Shane Logan // Chief Executive Chris Webster // Domestic Rugby Manager Audrey Robinson // Financial Controller Fiona Hampton // Head of Sales & Marketing

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Kingspan Stadium for this Guinness PRO12 match against Benetton Treviso.

Iain Henderson, Chris Henry, Paddy Jackson and Jared Payne, and I wish Joe Schmidt and all his players every success on Sunday against Italy and the following week against France. A win over Italy will secure a quarter final place but I am sure that they will want to beat France and top the group. The Domestic season is well and truly under way. I’m delighted to report that the majority of Ulster’s teams have enjoyed a promising start to their Ulster Bank League campaigns, and it was great to see so many out supporting the Millar McCall Wylie Junior Cup games last weekend. I hope that you all enjoy the game and give Treviso a great reception this evening. Good luck to Ulster and remember STAND UP FOR THE ULSTERMEN! Bobby Stewart // President IRFU (Ulster Branch)

I would particularly like to welcome the committee, members, players and supporters from Italy. You are all very welcome and I hope you enjoy your time in Belfast. It is just under three weeks since our last match and I hope the players and their families enjoyed their time off. Tonight’s game is only the third round of PRO12 matches this season and both teams will be desperate for a successful outcome. Ulster had a good win against Ospreys but were disappointing at Scarlets and Benetton Treviso have lost narrowly to Munster and Edinburgh. Ulster will need to produce the same sort of form that they displayed against Ospreys if they are to get a result tonight. Since the last match the World Cup has started and Ireland has had two very good wins over Canada and Romania. I congratulate them, especially the Ulster players, Rory Best, Tommy Bowe, Darren Cave,

Welcome back to Round 3 of the Guinness PRO12 Firstly may I say what a great weekend of rugby that was with all four PRO12 countries winning key games at the Rugby World Cup. The Guinness PRO12 has more representation in RWC2015 than any other club competition with 106 players representing 10 countries participating, let’s hope that they all have a long, successful tournament! We’re all looking forward to another great season of rugby ahead and the Guinness PRO12 will continue its year-on-year growth and development. All teams can now target and look forward to this season’s Guinness PRO12 Final at BT Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Saturday 28th May 2016, one of rugby fans’ top destinations. Tickets are now on public sale and demand is very good so far. Our partnership with Guinness has been an unqualified success both on and off the park. The continued support of our other partners Specsavers and Rhino Rugby is also recognised as a key component in our growth as a competition. We again thank our very strong suite of broadcasters, our newest broadcast partner Sky Sports together with BBC - Alba, Northern Ireland, Scotland & Wales, S4C, TG4 and Rai Sport in Italy. Tonight’s game will see Ulster trying to maintain their winning start at home to the season, having slipped up last time out against the Scarlets. Benetton Treviso for their part will be seeking their first win of the campaign having narrowly lost to Edinburgh and Munster so far. There should be lots of entertainment – enjoy the game! We acknowledge the excellent work of all of our match officials and disciplinary officers and wish them all well for the season ahead. The ongoing support of the media in promoting our sport and our competition is key to the development of the Guinness PRO12 and we look forward to continuing and enhancing our work together. To you the fans, we extend a very warm welcome back to Round 3 in the Guinness PRO12, your support of your club is key. Have a great weekend of rugby.

ANDREW TRIMBLE: 190 Andrew Trimble will become Ulster’s most capped player tonight when he runs out to make his 190th appearance for his province, overtaking the previous record held by Paddy Wallace. We caught up with the history- maker to get his thoughts on his first 190 games in the white jersey:

ANDREW TRIMBLE

What are your aims for the future? AT It seems a little bit strange getting to 190 now having only played one game for Ulster in the past 12 months. So my aim is just to build on that now. I want to perform well on Friday night and get momentum. We have a long stretch of 12 games and it’s important that we continue to build performances, both as individuals and as a team and get our season on track. How many caps do you want to reach before hanging up the boots? AT It is important to continue to be greedy really and to motivate myself to achieve something extra. I never thought that I would get to 190 when I started my career and now I want to get to 200, even 250 and keep pushing it. I want to experience putting on a white shirt as much as I can. If I slow down the likes of Roger Wilson is just behind me, Rory isn’t far away. Then Gilroy (Craig) and the rest of the youngsters are going to overtake us! For now, I’m just enjoying being a part of Ulster Rugby and achieving something that I am really proud of.

What will it mean to become Ulster’s all-time appearance record holder? AT Whenever I started my career I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would get to 190 appearances for Ulster. Every game has been unbelievable, especially the matches at Kingspan Stadium on a Friday night. Paddy (Wallace) is a guy who I have a massive amount of respect for so overtaking his total means a lot. It’s going to be a very special night for me. What games do you remember in particular? AT There are a few stand out moments. I will never forget the night that I kicked the ground against Scarlets and fell over and everyone laughed at me! For a better reason I will never forget the day that we beat Munster in the quarter-final down at Thomond Park. I’ll never forget getting the chance to play in the Heineken Cup Final. Obviously, it didn’t go our way but to be part of a team that is building and growing is special. I’m sure that we are on the brink of winning some silverware soon. Winning 190 caps is amazing, I’m very proud of that, but we want to win something.

ANDREWWARWICK: SPORT & FAME RUNS IN THE FAMILY

You would think that being an Ulster player would make Andrew Warwick the most successful sportperson in his family, but his slightly older cousin Jonathan has just become a world champion.

ANDREW WARWICK

players are aiming to bounce back after the defeat to Scarlets in West Wales: “It has been two weeks since we played. We are well rested and well prepped for the game on Friday. We started the PRO12 season really well with the win over Ospreys. Hopefully the Scarlets game is just one of those games that we learn from quickly and move on. It’s great to be back at Kingspan Stadium with this game against Treviso and hopefully we will get a big win. Warwick is fully aware of the challenge that Treviso pose – especially up front: He says: “They are a big pack and they like to scrum a lot longer than other teams so that’s something we have been preparing for in training. Their line out is solid – they win most of their own ball. We hope to get up and nick a few of theirs and win our own.” Andrew has started both of Ulster’s games so far – a run that he is keen to continue: “It is great to be starting a few games. Hopefully I can keep competing for that starting space. Callum (Black) is a great player. My aim is to try my best and keep in front while I am wearing that 1 jersey. “Scrums went well me for me last year but my big aim was to get around the pitch a bit better, maybe make an odd carry and make all my tackles. This was my first big pre-season and that has helped my fitness. I’m more confident and I’m improving each week.” If he keeps improving the way he has been, Jonathan Rea’s position as most famous sportsperson in the Warwick / Rea family will be under threat.

A fortnight ago Jonathan Rea became FIM World Superbike Champion at Jerez on his WSBK Kawasaki bike: “He’s definitely a lot more famous than me!” concedes Andrew. “He’s world champion and he has done so well this season. He has won a lot of races and been in pole position in many of those. It’s been pretty impressive by him and there are still two more races to go. “When we were young we played in each others gardens. I was out with his younger brother Richard and we were riding one of Jonathan’s scramblers. I tried to hit a jump and I landed on my head! I decided that was the end of my bike career! Everyone in the family is really proud of Jonathan, it’s great to see. The support that he had in Jerez was unreal.” Andrew will be looking for similar passionate support when he runs out against Treviso. It has been a mixed start for the team but he says the

CHARITY MARACYCLE 2015 50 year old Larne Rugby Coach, Davy Wilson is raising funds for Ulster Rugby’s Charity Partner the IRFU Charitable Trust.

providing much needed sustenance. Davy gave a crash course on how to make an Irish coffee! Day 4 saw the eagerly awaited arrival of Paul O’Connell with many Facebook followers more excited than Davy and Nigel. After a 7am ice bath in the Lake watching the sunrise, breakfast was downed and P O’C duly arrived; unfortunately, it was a Swiss based Roscommon man – not the Irish skipper! What seemed on paper a fairly straightforward 75 km day became really torturous as the three Amigos chose a route via the Spa town of Yverdon before climbing over 12 km of tough rising terrain, having lunch at the top and a 12 km drop into Lausanne just in time for Ireland v Wales. P O’C made his exit back to Basle – just as his namesake was saying farewell to the Aviva. The last day featured an initial straightforward 80 km route from Lausanne via Vevey, Montreaux, St. Gingolph before arriving at 3pm into Evian for afternoon tea in Davy’s favourite local Cafe Mont Delice and some craic with owners Johan and Vero and manager Sonia – again a donation was made by the generous Belgian owner. At this stage they were met by more ex-pats from Larne – the Calverts from Geneva and their three children who fortunately relieved them of their baggage for the arduous 15 km climb to the finish at Thollon. The lads, despite a second puncture, managed the climb in just over an hour with the Calverts, adorned in Ulster and IRFU Flags, enthusiastically singing SUFTUM at every peak and gathering at the top, joined by several locals (and a random Portadown chap) to cheer them over the line. An epic journey – what a way to see a beautiful country! the trip finished with a lavish meal and fine Prosecco French style in Le XV restaurant with ex-Montpellier rugby star ‘Arno’ handing over a donation cheered on by the locals. A late night followed in Le Choumas where locals celebrated more enthusiastically than the tired travellers! Help Davy reach his £6,000 target by visiting https:/crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ CharityMaracycle

Davy has a home in France and also enjoys cycling. Recently he decided to cycle from Romanshorn, Lake Constance on the German/Austrian border through Switzerland to Thollon in order to raise funds for the IRFU Charitable Trust. The Trust works to help past players who have suffered serious life changing injuries. His route was just over 500 kms. Davy’s motto throughout the trek was simple: “I’m only riding a bike – the real men are those injured ex-players who push themselves physically and emotionally every day.” Over £4000 has already been raised and Davy would like your help to grow this to £6000 before the closing date of the end of October. Hopefully sharing his story will go a little way to help. THE STORY OF THE JOURNEY… The journey started on the 25th August after a night in a Hostel in Romanshorn along the shores of Lake Constance. The initial stages of the cycle route took him north of St. Gallen through breathtaking farmlands reminiscent of 70s style farming in NI with small herds and using low intensive farming methods. Apple orchards and sunflower crops were common in this area but after a morning in the saddle he found the bike route terrain too rough for a 17 stone laden Btwin Racer so after a light lunch and advice from some locals, (one of whom was a Swiss rugby fan wearing an Ireland jersey), the afternoon took him onto the busy A roads which needed full concentration despite generous cycle lanes. After 129 km he arrived in the wealthiest city on the globe - Zurich - for another overnight Hostel stop. Day 2 took Davy North of Zurich to Baden for his first pit stop and here he decided to follow the B roads in order to enjoy the scenery in a more relaxed manner. The down side was that these roads were more undulating with long difficult climbs followed by surprisingly difficult downhills, the Paniers making the bike quite unstable. It was another glorious day with temperatures in the 30s and it took him through some picturesque towns including Aarau and Olten before arriving close to darkness in Solothurn. The local Irish Bar (called The Shipyards) brought the traditional Friday ‘Irish night’ forward to Thursday and following some entertainment a generous donation to the cause was made by Stephane (the owner) and the clientele. Day 3 was quite an emotional one as it was the 2nd anniversary of his mum’s passing but he was given extra impetus by being joined by fellow ex-Larneman, Nigel Montgomery, now based in Basle. Nigel settled into Davy’s slipstream for another stunning cycle from German speaking to French speaking Swiss at Biel, skirting the Lake before cutting across to Lake Neuchatel where snow capped peaks formed an amazing backdrop to the perfect lake. 82 km was very welcome after the punishing first two days and overnight was spent in Gorgier with a local restaurant

CASELLATO PREDICTS EXCITING FUTURE FOR GUINNESS PRO12 According to Benetton Treviso coach, Umberto Casellato, European fans are in for another intriguing PRO12 season, writes Enrico Borra.

CLUB STATS //Location Treviso, Italy //Founded 1932 //Ground Stadio Comunale di Monigo //Capacity 6,700 //Last Game Edinburgh (H) 24-27 (L) Saturday 3rd Jan 2015 at 15.00 //Next Game Ospreys (H) Saturday 17th Oct 2015 at 14:30 //Recent Form L L L L L

will be able to contribute immediately to the Warriors’ title defence. “But in general, the way the clubs prepared in the pre-season will influence their season, that’s a pretty simple rule, and this year that is directly connected to the national teams’ preparation. “So it will be really interesting to see how the squads will progress to the second half of the campaign.” Increasing standards in the PRO12 has been widely recognised by the rugby community and Casellato is one of those who believe the competition is growing at an impressive pace. “I’m not the only one that says the tournament is growing in competence and competitiveness,” explained Casellato. “There have been results that has underlined its progress: Leinster, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh’s sucess in the recent European competitions speak volumes on how the PRO12 has quickly become a force in Northern Hemisphere rugby.” This year will be an important one for Italian rugby, as fans are asking both Benetton Treviso and Zebre Rugby, historically at the bottom of the standings, to accelerate in the learning curve and start contributing to the competition’s global growth.

The presence of the Rugby World Cup in the first part of the calendar and the progress made during the last campaign, which ended with Glasgow Warriors’ historic triumph, will create the perfect base from which to build the future of the competition. “I think we are going to live through a pretty interesting season,” reveals Casellato. “Every club involved in the Guinness PRO12 has been vigorously active in the summer due to the World Cup, and the fact that they knew they would play an important part of the season without their best players. “Everybody has looked at bringing in quality replacements in time for the beginning of the season, and not to lose too many points in the play-off race in the first couple of months. “That’s basically why every team is now much more competitive than a year ago - larger squads with better internal competition. “Having said that, that doesn’t necessarily mean that every team will play better and will improve as there are different aspects to be considered when clubs introduce new faces. “First it’s not guaranteed that a player will contribute to his new club in the same way he did at the previous one and there are also frequently troubles from the players in adapting to the rugby adopted in a different competition. “So it will be pretty interesting to see how each set of coaches will implement the new signings and how they will integrate the new players into the set-up. As said before, the Rugby World Cup will play a crucial role this season. “Yes, a lot will depend on the Rugby World Cup pool stage,” explained Casellato. “If, say, Scotland, don’t reach the quarter-finals their players

KINGSPAN STADIUM TO HOST IRELAND WOMEN

Kingspan Stadium will host an Ireland Women’s open training session on Saturday 10th October 2015. This news comes after the exciting announcement that Dublin and Belfast will host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2017, the final stages of which will take place at our very own Kingspan Stadium.

WOMEN’S RUGBY

Tickets for this event are available now and are complimentary to all supporters. You can print yours now from home by visiting www.ulsterrugby.com/Tickets. Tickets are also available via telephone (028 9049 3222 Option 2) or from the Ticket Office at Kingspan Stadium.

There are now 16 adult women’s teams playing in competitions across the province, almost double the number participating two years ago. The popularity of women’s rugby has increased dramatically and the Ireland team has been at the forefront of the success story, winning the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2013 and claiming the Six Nations title earlier this year. At the Women’s RWC in 2014, they caused one of the biggest upsets in Women’s World Cup history when they defeated four-time defending champions New Zealand in the pool stages, before going on to finish fourth – their best ever result and one they will no doubt be looking to top in 2017. Gates will open at 1.30pm and supporters will have access to the coveted Women’s Rugby World Cup Trophy and the Women’s Six Nations Trophy for photo opportunities in the Scrum Bar. An open training session will take place between 2.30pm and 4pm and following that squad members will be available for a meet and greet.

STUART McCLOSKEY CENTRE OF ATTENTION

A powerful handoff, a barnstorming run and four defenders left on the ground. Stuart McCloskey’s try against Ospreys was typical of the 23 year-old for whom strength and pace have become hallmarks.

No-one is guaranteed a starting spot, we are all fighting for places and it’s really competitive. “There are aspects of my game that I need to work on. Things went really well against Osprey but Scarlets wasn’t what we were looking for and everyone was a bit disappointed with how it went. Hopefully we will get back on track against Treviso and get the win.” McCloskey, like all the players, is wary of the threat posed by Treviso.

What wasn’t typical however was that in that match the inside-centre also assumed the kicking duties. He missed his first shot at goal in front of the posts, but having scored that wonder-try in the corner, he got up, dusted himself down and slotted the conversion from the touchline. Such confidence is a key characteristic of McCloskey who is widely tipped as a future Ireland international and who is certain to be a major player for Ulster in this and the coming seasons: “I wasn’t doing much

STUART McCLOSKEY

“They look to throw it a bit wider than you think and they do like playing rugby. Perhaps their only weakness is that they only throw it wide when they are 14 odd points down. I think if they could play a bit more like that then they would perhaps cause a few more problems right from the start. “We expect to win every match at home. We are going out there with confidence. If we were to get four tries, that would be fantastic. If we were to just get the win, we would be happy at this stage”. Having excelled in a white shirt, McCloskey is now targeting a green jersey:

until a few weeks before the Ospreys game and I was trying to get the hang of it again,” he jokes. “It’s easy enough hitting kicks out on the training field with no-one looking, but when there are 14,000 people in the ground and TV cameras trained on you, it gets a bit harder!” He says that adrenalin got the kick from the corner over the posts: “I was on a high from scoring the try. I didn’t really think about it too much. I think that’s half the battle! Just don’t over-think it. In a couple

of weeks I’ll never have to kick for Ulster again!” Kicking penalty goals is just an extra bonus from a player that has played 21 times for this province. Despite being a nailed on starter at the moment, he knows that competition for places remains as fierce as ever: “I have to prove myself every time I go out there,” says Stuart. “I definitely feel more established in the side, especially at this time when all the internationals are away. I have to step up and be a more senior player than when maybe they are here.

“I would love to be going on the international tour to South Africa at the end of the season or to have played an international game. However, my goals are just to get in the Ulster team and to play week-by-week. Wherever it goes from there, I’ll be happy”. If he maintains the form that he has showed at the start of this season it wont be long before we will see him representing Ireland. Whether he is kicking the goals for the international side however, is another matter…

“WE EXPECT TOWIN EVERY MATCH AT HOME. WE ARE GOING OUT THERE WITH CONFIDENCE...”
