A few new things to talk about in this Beacon. First, we have a new entry from our newly designated Harbormaster Leslie Leitch. Formerly appointed as Incoming Rendezvous, Leslie has worked to control the boating guests that attend Poker Runs, Fundraisers, and Visiting Yachtsmen, etc. The nomenclature Harbormaster is universally recognized in the boating community and so the designation was changed in an effort to help others to understand his position. Look for his page later in this Beacon for information on the currently approved incoming rendezvous so we can all plan accordingly. Another new feature for us comes from Boat US. They’ve made available to us their library of informative articles written for the boating public and I’ve included 2 in this Beacon. The first of them is again regarding the Drowning Hazard associated with swimming in a marina caused by electrical failures on nearby boats. Please note, because equipment like battery chargers and air conditioners go on and off randomly all the time, and because boats move, a place that’s safe today, may be dangerous tomorrow, or even 5 minutes from now. No Swimming in Harbors!! The second came as a shock to me, virtually every fire extinguisher made by Kidde and sold for boats since 1973 has been recalled. Look at the article later in this Beacon and check for yours by clicking the link on that page. The recalled fire extinguishers were sold under many brand names and have plastic handles. So now for some good news, Spring is Due to Show Up at any time! Our mistresses await us in the marina and I can’t wait to take her out, and neither can my wife! Am I

April is here and we are getting closer to opening up our island for another fun season of boating and camaraderie. Please make every effort to attend the Elite Brigade work parties which start April 14th. We will need lots of help as we begin removing and replacing the old siding on the clubhouse along with the other list of duties to make the island come alive. Exciting news……..P/C Denise Huntley along with P/C Bill Bauer are bringing back our Steer Roast for our “Fitting Out” weekend starting May 26th. The First mates will be hosting an appetizer patio party before the General membership meeting. We then have our General Membership meeting which starts at 1:00 PM, where you will get a chance to meet our new members, followed by the Steer Roast. We have entertainment planned that evening. On Sunday we will continue with our opening Flag raising ceremonies with a complementary luncheon to follow. Please mark your calendars for Ladies Week. It will be starting Sunday June 10th at 6:00 PM thru Thursday, June 14th after lunch. Look for future FanOuts for further information. We still need 2 weekday managers to fill our missing slots in September. Please try to get some member friends together to fill those two missing weeks and let Vicky or Dick Raymond know. (810-794-4850). There is still time to join over 60 of your fellow NCYC members for the Commodore’s Cruise in September. The cruise will take us from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia along the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Please contact me if you are interested in joining us or have questions.

The Great Lakes are sure getting some much-needed attention! The EPA released a plan for reducing levels of phosphorus that feed giant masses of algae on the shallowest of the Great Lakes. Excessive algal growth poses substantial threats to both Lake Erie’s ecosystem and human health. In the last decade, harmful and nuisance algae growth in the lake has increased significantly due to storms that deliver high levels of nutrients from major rivers. Recurring algae blooms and associated “dead zones” (oxygen-depleted areas created when algae die and decompose) threaten drinking water quality and Lake Erie’s critical $12.9 billion tourism industry and world-class fishery. Also, while you are on the water, watch out for a yellow torpedo looking device. It is called a Slocum glider. It will be cruising through the Great Lakes collecting data for scientists, such as tagged fish and their movements, water temperature and the forming of harmful algae blooms. The glider sends the data back to the lab in a real time fashion so the scientists and researchers can make decisions quicker. It sure is nice to see the leadership in the government when is comes to such a vital resource. On March 11th, Marie and I along with Commodore Randy and Linda Pagel, PC Tom and Judy McHugh and Frank and Dianne Corcoran had the pleasure of representing North Channel Yacht Club at the Blessing of the Fleet in Detroit. It is truly an honor to be part of such a long-standing tradition in such a historical church. If you have never taken part in the Blessing of the Fleet, mark you calendars for the second Sunday in March. It’s time to make sure your watercraft registration is up to date. All watercraft, unless exempt, must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State. Registrations expire March 31 in the third year of issuance. Coming up fast and furious is the first Elite Brigade on Saturday April 14th. Please try to attend as many work parties as possible because we need your help. Also coming up is the First Mates Fashion show on May 6th. This is a premier event hosted by the First Mates and a great way to spend time with family and reconnect with NCYC friends. On April 14th we will begin the task of preparing the club house and harbor and grounds for the up-coming boating season. If you have any specific skill such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing etc. Please contact Harbor and Grounds Director Tom Altobelli or Club House Director Scott Greenfelder ahead of time to offer your services. This will help Tom and Scott in preparing for the work weekends ahead. Please review the O.D. work schedule for your work weekend. You should contact the O.D. you are assigned to for specific scheduling of work hours. If you have any questions feel free to contact Secretary Glenn Nixon. During the month of March, Dick and Vickie Raymond suffered the sudden loss of Dick’s mother on March 3, 2018 after a fall. Dick mentioned that she had spent a lot of time at the club and knew many members. Please remember her, the Raymond family and all of the NCYC family in your prayers.

The first day of Spring has passed and our thoughts are turning to starting anew. The following passage appealed to me as a plan.

“Gardens of our Souls” If I were planning a flower garden of color, texture and form, my first step would be to prepare the ground for planting. So I would pull up any weeds that might interfere with the growth of the flowers, knowing that weeding only one time would not be enough. To ensure the growth of my flowers, I would weed my garden regularly. The same holds true in the garden of my soul where thoughts and faith come together to form a spirituality that nourishes and sustains me. If I continue to weed my mind of hurt feelings and angry thoughts, then I am clearing the way for positive images to grow and flourish. It is true – love and understanding will come forth as I free my thoughts and prepare the way for positive living. HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER SEASON !!!!

Spring has sprung!! I hope everyone has a very Happy Easter!! We are looking forward to the First Mate Fashion Show on Sunday May 6, 2018. It is being held at Barrister Gardens and reservations are being taken by Jill Romatz. Form and check are due by April 21, 2018. The fashion show is a great way to take a more active role in participating with First Mates. This is our largest fund raiser. Donations are welcome for the raffle as well as monetary donations. Hello NCYC Members, Let me introduce myself for those who do not know me. My name is Leslie Leitch and I have been working with the past three Commodores on organizing the use of our club from other yacht clubs and incoming rendezvous. This year Commodore Randy Pagel has labeled my position as Harbor Master. My duties are to take requests from other clubs and present them to the Board and Bridge for approval. They discuss the dates and clubs and either approves or not based on our club’s activities for those days. The focus has been to promote clubs to come during the week more than the weekends, but there have been some approved weekend incoming events. Therefore, my other duty is to notify our members of those approved incoming boats in order for you to note them on your calendar and be aware of these outings. The following are the

approved incoming rendezvous for the upcoming 2018 boating season: • 6/1-6/3 - ABYA Spring Dinner Dance -Limited to 30 ABYA boats: weekend • 6/22 – Antique Boat Poker Run -no wells -just a stop by Saturday • 7/16 -7/19 – Sandusky Yacht Club - 8 boats: Mon -Thurs • 7/23-7/26 – CYC -12 boats: Mon -Thurs • 7/27-7/29 – JBM – 25-30 boats: weekend • 7/31 – 8/3 Harbor View Yacht Club – 14 boats: Tues -Fri morn • 8/3 – 8/5 Sand Pointe – 15 boats: weekend

Please put these on your calendar so you can make plans accordingly and be aware of what is happening with the incoming rendezvous. In addition, for further control for our club and its members, all incoming rendezvous must sign our new rules and regulation form that was created this year. This is a document of rules and regulations regarding the use of the grounds and policies that all guests must follow. Commodore’s Comments

It is hard to believe we are attending our second board meeting of the year. I want to thank all of you for attending the Commodore’s Ball. Linda and I truly enjoyed the evening and couldn’t believe it went so fast. Special thanks to all of you who help set up and take down on Saturday. We have a lot to cover tonight, so my comments are short. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn Want to congratulate Commodore Randy and his First Lady on an excellent Ball. Commended P/C Carroll for the choices for all the awards. Reminder to the membership that if you haven’t already, be sure to get your work request over to Secretary Glen Nixon to get scheduled. Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan I would like to start out saying what a great Commodore’s Ball. Congratulations to Commodore Randy, Lady Linda and all of those on your committee for a job well done. A good time was held by all. Rear-Commodore’s Comments

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the “Hatzenbuhler Trophy” member of the year award, awarded to P/C Brain McEvoy and Lady Renee. Also, the “Spirit of the Year award”, awarded to P/C Tom McHugh and Lady Judy. Well-deserved and congratulations.

Even though the snow started to fall again and the weather service has predicted a winter storm to begin this weekend, there is a lot of boating themed activities coming up between now and island opening.

Blessing of the fleet at the Mariners Church in downtown Detroit, ABYA Spring Rendezvous Midland, NCYC bowling league and the Detroit Boat Show starting February 17, just to name a few. See P/C Pat Carroll for more information on these and other boating themed activities. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Delivered by Commodore Pagel in Brian’s absence. Did reach out to our accounting firm to start the tax review. Sent Fifth Third Bank all the information for us to switch over the accounts for the director changes. Ken, Tom, P/C Pat and the Commodore need to stop by. Discussed having enough checks. Copies were distributed to all directors of the financial report. ABYA Report P/C Pat Carroll Reported on last Monday’s ABYA meeting. Guest speaker was Luke Clyburn Captain of the Pride of Michigan and the Noble Foundation. Talked about research done on the Great Lakes from many years back. Next month’s speaker will be from The Clinton River Water Shed Council. Passed out surveys in regards to having lights in the North Channel for safer nighttime navigation. Survey available on their website. July 14th is Veterans Day at Idle Hour. ABYA has ½ off Detroit Boat show tickets. They will have a booth there and looking for NCYC pamphlets for ABYA to hand out at the boat show. If interested, NCYC members can work at the ABYA booth, contact ABYA Commodore Ed. ABYA Spring Rendezvous is All Received thank you cards from Larry and Adrienne Gierlowski and from the family of Norma Riehl. CURRENT BUSINESS Activities – Tom Martin Club made $6200 from activities for 2017. Club House – Tom Altobelli Located gas valve and ignition switch for gas stove in the kitchen and also getting a set of knobs. Planning on having an estimate to replace the 80 sq. feet of floor in kitchen by ice machine that constantly gets wet from removing ice from the machine. Plan on sloping the new floor into a drain. Also, Contacted Comcast for their annual audit for cost. They found treasurer email account had been disconnected. Need to alert Brian to get the password changed. Our cable boxes and controllers are old. Working on getting updated ones. Randy had question about getting natural gas from a gas company (i.e. Consumers Energy) instead of the parking lot LP tank. Darryl indicated this was investigated in the past and the cost was very high. Scott to reinvestigate this option to see if cost has come down. Harbor & Grounds Scott Greenfelder Tom’s attempting to contact Tom Stackpoole to see about taking care of the club grounds for 2018. Tom was approached by several members at the Ball with concerns about the steel poles in the harbor that are unprotected. Will look into this. Also request made to put 50-amp electrical service on the end of D dock (Robison side). Also a few 50 amp receptacles on A dock need repairing. Do we have a club electrician? Answer was members with electrical experience typically step up to conduct this work. Membership Debbie Siwek Deposited $90,525 from membership dues. Discussed a situation with a member who did not meet his work weekend obligation last year. Sent in dues for the 2018 season, but was informed he owed for not working weekend last year. Member suggested he just put the $700 dues toward what he owes for not working his weekend and resign in good standing. That way he can visit the club frequently as he has many friends that are still members. Debbie will get with member and work out payment to allow for resignation in good March 9 th – 11 th . standings, but will alert him that he will no longer be a member and because NCYC is a private club, there is a limit on how often non-members can visit the club. An unnamed member still owes $200 in work or pay. Won’t returned Deb’s calls. Motion was made that he has lost his NCYC membership and is considered a member in bad standing. Need to wait until grace period is over. Tabled until march. Received a request on behalf of John Prochaska requesting leave of his work responsibilities due to health reasons. Board determined this request needs to be a written request from John himself. Got LOA letter from Charlie Cook. Debbie informed Ron that KimMiedema asked if she can help him with the roster again? Absolutely! Darryl owes him new waiting list for guest wells. Secretary – Glenn Nixon OD and weekend schedules are progressing - ahead of last year. Working on finalizing all his information needed for the roster. Roster goes to print about 4/15. Been experimenting with the document section of the website to be able to upload schedules and assignments. Will send Fanouts with a link to members with these updated schedules. Supplies – Dale Hall Talked last month about higher prices for nonmembers. Need additional way to allow members to get items at lower price. Can put a button on register screen for member lower prices. Need to work on this. OLD BUSINESS Incoming Rendezvous/Poker Run rule proposal Looked at updated proposal sent out last month. Board approved the following: North Channel Yacht Club Incoming Rendezvous, Poker Run, Fund Raiser; Group Policies and Guidelines You are visiting a Private Yacht Club. The Club is staffed by Member Volunteers, there are no paid custodians. The following guidelines apply. A per diem for boats or persons may apply. Entry into and enjoyment of North Channel Yacht Club is a privilege which is extended to certain groups or individuals only during their continued compliance with these policies and guidelines. Groups or individuals not in compliance will not be welcome for future visits . 1. Your guests will be welcome on the island; Date _______________ from __________ to __________. Set up and clean up personnel, if any, are welcome from ____________ to _____________. 2. Prior to your departure, the group sponsor will be expected to police the island and collect and carry from the island all trash, litter, empty containers, etc. We don’t want your empties; we want you to leave our island the way you found it. 3. The group sponsor will be expected to stay on the island until the last guest has departed the island. 4. NCYC Members have Priority for all wells, docks, kitchen, bar, and all club facilities at all times. Guests are expected to yield at the request of any Member, including moving a guest boat if need be. NCYC OD or Week Manager or Harbor Master reserves the right to assign or re-assign guest wells. 5. Shirts and Shoes are to be worn in the Club House at all times, no wet bathing suits allowed.

6. Guests are to sign in the Guest Register located adjacent to the Bar next to the Fireplace immediately upon arrival. 7. No outside alcohol is allowed in the Club House. You may consume your own alcohol on your boats, or on island grounds outside the Club House. 8. Alcohol purchased inside the Club House must be consumed in the Club House, Deck, or Gazebo. 9. Fire Arms are NOT allowed in the Club Parking Lot or on the Island at any time. USCG Approved signal devices excluded. 10. “Freebies” are not included in your party unless specifically granted in writing prior to the event; all drinks, bar food, ice, boutique items, etc. are for sale. 11. No Swimming in the Harbor or Canals at any time. Our designated swimming hole excluded. 12. No Loud Music or Boisterous behavior while visiting our Private Club. 13. All NCYC By-Laws and Policies are in effect at all times. The Week Manager or O.D. has FINAL SAY on any dispute or decision during your visit. Initial reports say the youngster died when touching a dock’s electrified boatlift, and the Ohio teen died as a result of dangerous electrical current in the water while trying to save his father and family dog that also appeared to be stricken by the electrical current. The BoatUS Foundation, the boating- safety arm of the nations’ largest recreational boat owners group, has some tips to prevent an electrocution tragedy.
