Magical mystery Christmas tour

Four family tickets to 4 Kingdoms to be won

4 KINGDOMS Magical Christmas Adventure is not the Santa’s grotto you find in town and garden centres, where you pay to see Santa and it’s all over in minute. Follow the elves through a Magical Christmas trail and enjoy a story-telling journey full of interactive scenes, characters and activities. It’s a two-hour journey full of stories and surprises through the Christmas experience, ending up with Santa and a gift for your child. It all starts off in the Magical Forest and then leads on to Santa’s Toy Factory just before you get to Fairy Tale Land. Then it’s off to the Frozen Castle, before arriving in Mrs Claus’ Kitchen for cookie decorating. Marvel at the teddies in Teddybear Land, stop off at the Victorian Street Scene, Arctic Scene, Make a Bear, Snow Walk, Undercover Play Area and finish off at Santa’s Grotto. Every child on a paid ticket will build their own husky and give it a little bright heart. They can then name their cuddly husky and 4 Kingdoms will register its birth with its own birth certificate. (Shhhh, It’s a surprise when they get to Santa.) They can then take it home with them to love forever. (Under ones free tickets are non-participating.) Book your tickets on www.4-kingdoms.co.uk.

Royal Oak has a warm welcome THE Royal Oak, Ecchinswell, offers a warm and cosy welcome with elegance wherever you turn, from the large manicured lawns, with a river flowing majestically by, to the fresh atmosphere of the light, airy and uncluttered interior. The owners, Chris and Laura, are immensely welcoming and are rightly proud of the select menu, which uses as much local produce as possible. The Royal Oak is a popular local haunt, with a reputation for fabulous evening meals, as well as its superb Sunday lunch. Chris and Laura’s aim was to create the perfect environment for relaxing and entertaining, and never more so than in the festive season when the blazing fire offers a warm welcome to this cosy establishment. And there’s plenty of choice on the festive menu as well. The Royal Oak is open Monday to Thursday, noon

One-Stop competition

THE One Stop Service Centre has been established for more than 15 years but Peter Jung and Chris Ielden took over the company just over 12 months ago to bring a fresh new approach and attitude to the car maintenance and repair industry. On top of the regular servicing and MOTs, its comprehensive service includes free collection and delivery, transportation to a local address, free courtesy car (subject to availability) and all at prices that can be up to 60 per cent cheaper than a main dealer. Peter said: “When Chris and I took over we wanted to make sure that all our customers feel comfortable coming to the One Stop Service Centre so we always discuss matters to do with the vehicles in simple straightforward language and use layperson’s terms wherever possible.” He added: “We’re accommodating and obliging because customer service is our key focus. We also provide full vehicle safety inspection reports backed up with the latest tools and technology to show the vehicle condition and any corrective action that’s been taken or is advised.” After just one year in charge the business has grown considerably with this approach and continues to go from strength to strength. So, if your car requires servicing or repair contact Peter or Chris at the One Stop Service Centre where you’ll find that they go the extra mile to do everything just that little bit better. We have a free MOT and 20 per cent off follow-up service (not including parts ) to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, answer the following question and send your entry to the address on page five. Q How much cheaper can One Stop prices be compared to a main dealer?

Quality from Christmas Tree Farm NEWBURY Christmas Tree Farm is located just to the west of

Three £25 discount

Newbury on the Bagnor Road. It supplies high-quality Christmas trees, stands and decorations to the local community. Newbury Christmas Tree Farm grows and sells a variety of species to suit everyone’s needs. Its main species is the Nordmann Fir, which in the last 20 years has become the UK’s favourite tree. All of its trees are grown within a 10- mile radius of the farm and are freshly cut to demand. Choosing the right tree can take time, especially if you don’t know the difference between the types. Below the farm has listed the varieties it sells, with a handy description to help you decide. And if you need more advice, just get in touch via the contact page, or ask the friendly staff when you come into the farm – they’ll be pleased to assist you. Nordmann Fir – Firm favourite due to its impressive, glossy green foliage, and superb needle-holding ability. This is the perfect family-friendly tree, ideally suited for indoor displays. Norway Spruce – The traditional British Christmas tree with a classic pine fragrance. Its short light-green foliage and broad spread give the tree a nice shape. Although the Nordmann Fir holds its needles better, the Norway Spruce’s ability to withstand the cold make it the better choice for an outdoor display.

Hold an ev nt to help end elderly loneliness

Creating special memories...

Win family pass to Bucklebury Park

Jubilee Nurseries competition

MAKE sure no older person is alone this Christmas unless they want to be. National charity Friends of the Elderly is calling on people in West Berkshire to hold Christmas Day activities in their community, so no older person will be alone unless they choose to. As official partner of Community Christmas, the charity hopes that more people than ever will get involved in 2016. With more than a third of older people living in West Berkshire affected by loneliness, and around half a million older people in the UK saying Christmas Day is when they feel most lonely, Friends of the Elderly and Community Christmas are asking people to give the gift of time. Tony Smith, 61, doesn’t have any family and usually spends Christmas Day alone, watching TV. Last year, thanks to Community Christmas, he attended a Christmas lunch and also enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment and games. He said: “It was the first time Christmas actually meant something to me; it was the best Christmas I’ve ever had.” Last year, eight activities in West Berkshire were registered with Community Christmas, including a Christmas Day lunch

in Thatcham and light refreshments in Newbury. But even more are needed to reach as many older people as possible. Organising an activity is easy. It’s not just about the turkey dinner – you could get people to watch a Christmas film, share a tea and a mince pie in a pub, or enjoy a Christmas Day walk. Jo O’Boyle, director of engagement at Friends of the Elderly, said: “Friends of the Elderly is delighted to be work- ing with Community Christmas again this year to support older people facing Christmas alone. “We know that loneliness can have a devastating impact on older people’s lives and those we

work with tell us that becoming isolated from a day community they were once part of can be especially difficult. “That’s why we’re calling on individuals, organisations and businesses to put on activities on Christmas Day to bring together older people in their community who don’t want to be alone.” If you’re organising an activity on Christmas Day, or know of one in your area, contact Community Christmas so it can be listed on the website, making it easier for older people to know what’s happening in West Berkshire. Lights, camera, action! CHRISTMAS festivities will officially begin in Newbury at the switch-on of the Christmas lights on Sunday, November 27. Wrap up warm and head to the Shoppers will be entertained by choir singers dotted around the town, and participating stores will stay open until 8pm. Road closures will be extended until this time in the town centre’s pedestrianised areas. Report by DAN COOPER email dan.cooper@newburynews.co.uk twitter @danc_nwn

There will also be free parking in the council-owned multi-storey car parks between 5pm and 8pm. If you can’t wait to get into the festive spirit you can join in the fun with this year’s Reindeer Hunt, which runs from November 14-20. Try to locate the 12 reindeers dotted around the town for a chance to win a ride for two in Santa’s sleigh. And what would Christmas be if there was no pantomime on hand to entertain us all? Coming to the Corn Exchange, Newbury, this year is Cinderella , which runs from Friday, Novem- ber 25, to Saturday, December 31. For more information, visit www.cornexchangenew.com/

Market Place nice and early to enjoy some of the best tastes of Christmas, from spicy mulled wine to warm cinnamon donuts and other traditional treats. Also, keep your eyes peeled for Mr Christmas himself, as Santa is expected to join a parade through the town centre at 4.30pm (as long as the little boys and girls have been good, of course!). The event climax will be at 5pm, when the festive lights, which will twinkle above Northbrook Street and Market Place, will be switched on. The event, run by Newbury BID, will feature live entertainment on stage from 2pm, building up to the parade at 4.30pm from the council

car park on Market Street. The parade will travel along Bartholomew Street, Northbrook Street, London Road, Park Way, and Wharf Street, finishing back in the Market Place. Don’t worry if you miss Santa on that day – he will be at his grotto in Parkway from December 3-6 and again from December 17-23. Unfortunately there will be no Christmas Village in Newbury this year. But there will be late-night shopping at the majority of town centre shops on Tuesday, December 15.

Have a ball at the Corn Exchange

Win five family tickets to Cinderella

EXPECT mischief, mayhem and plenty of silliness in the Corn Exchange’s highly anticipated 2016 pantomime – Cinderella. It’s November and there’s a magical twinkle in the air. For twice, even three times a day, over the festive period, crowds of excited children (and their adults) will descend upon the Corn Exchange to laugh, boo, hiss, cheer and sing along to this year’s pantomime, Cinderell a. Running from November 25 to December 31, the Corn Exchange will be transformed this festive season into the magical and faraway land of Newbury Bottom, full of adventure. Poor old Cinders slaves away all day clearing up after her horrid sisters. But with a sprinkling of fairy dust and a particularly large pumpkin, her luck is about to change. Will the hunky Prince Charming fall head over heels? And will Cinderella make it home by the time the clock strikes midnight? Cinderella comes from award- winning writer and director, Phil Willmott, whose smash-hit extravaganza, Dick Whittington , played to a record audience of more than 22,500 last year. So get ready to have a ball as we join Cinderella, her Fairy Godmother, beloved Buttons, Prince Charming and the Ugly Sisters – along with a host of hilarious new characters. This ever-popular pantomime has become a fun-filled tradition for the families of Newbury and beyond. So join us to follow Cinderella’s adventures for a truly sparkling
