MONTICELLO CHAMBER monticello-chamber.com Monticello

Small town charm. A thriving main street. A public garden and a spring-fed artesian lake with the catch of the day. That's the short list of what makes Monticello a great place to live, work, and visit. Downtown Monticello has plenty to brag about – with the hometown grocery store (excellent

deli and pizza) and several pubs. You definitely won't go away hungry! Some of your dining options are Java Lava (strong coffee, lunch, snacks, outside seating and free wifi), M&M Café (homemade soup and freshly baked pie, burgers and sandwiches), Pink Heifer Saloon & Smokehouse (the meat is the star of the show at this BBQ spot, and everyone raves about the sides), JonnyO's Pizzeria (pizza, pasta, wings and salads), and King's Bar and Grill (seasonal cocktails, fish fry on Fridays, and live music in their outdoor beer garden). From grand openings to Monticello Money “shop local” promotions, the Monticello Chamber of Commerce boosts local businesses and supports community organizations. Members meet up monthly to network, share expertise, develop ideas to put the spotlight on businesses and community initiatives. The chamber also sponsors a Holiday Decorating Contest. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Montesian Gardens – planted and maintained by volunteers. Picnic tables, benches, and a gazebo add to the welcoming atmosphere, and flags will be flying over Monticello Veterans Memorial. Lake Montesian offers scenic beauty and recreation for all seasons. Visit in early to mid-May to see the splendor of more than 100 crab apple trees blooming by the lake. All summer you'll see people paddling kayaks, and enjoying lakeside picnics. It's the perfect spot for kids to learn how to cast a line from one of the fishing piers. The winter freeze brings ice fishermen to the lake – along with the tradition of Monticello Community Club's “Chickeree” with that famous barbecued chicken – read all about it on page 8. Embrace the green space! The Badger State Trail and Sugar River State Trail intersect just east of Monticello. The trail is open for bikers, hikers, and snowmobilers. Check out the map on page 9. South of town – take the back roads to Parrfection Farm Market. This market is known for farm fresh goodness in all seasons. New in spring of 2023 – 10,000 tulips will be blooming!

MONTICELLO COMMUNITY CLUB HAS A SECRET Twice a year the Monticello Community Club hosts a chicken BBQ where people stand in line for hours to taste. It's a village tradition with a delicious twist. Charcoal smoke permeates the air every January and July in Monticello

Monticello Homecoming July 7-9

for the semi-annual “Chickeree” fundraisers. The event's success is a credit to volunteers, pitmasters, and the vision of one Roy Dickson, aptly nicknamed “The Colonel.”

People really rave about how great the chicken tastes... it's (because of) our sauce.

More than 60 years ago Dickson, the first “head cluck,” brought in an idea inspired by his time cooking for the local Amstutz Marty American Legion Post. When the legion quit doing chicken dinners, Dickson formulated a plan to raise money for the community. It quickly became an annual pilgrimage for locals and tourists alike. What makes this chicken special? “It's our sauce,” according to the club's treasurer Carol Strause. The original recipe came from the legion, and it's no surprise that the recipe is a well-guarded secret. But there's no secret to how the chicken is grilled. A long, covered cement block pit was built for the event, and it is lined with wood and charcoal. Large wire grates sandwich the chicken halves, as volunteers work in pairs to go down the line and turn each grate. “People really rave about how great the chicken tastes,” Strause said. “The pitmasters start at 5 in the morning getting the fire going. They continuously baste as they flip the chicken over.” And then, doused in that special sauce, the chickens are ready to eat. In just three hours on the second Sunday in July, the Chickeree at Monticello's Homecoming turns out 1,500 dinners, served with potato salad, slaw, dinner roll, ice cream and milk. A second BBQ is held in January. The winter Chickeree is just chicken, no meal, with about 500 half chickens sold. Membership in the Monticello Community Club is open to anyone, from individuals to businesses. And while there are more than 70 members, it takes even more manpower to run the Chickerees. The Monticello Community Club has a long-standing tradition of supporting local projects, with Chickeree profits going to many good causes. Since forming in 1937, club members have raised money and channeled it back to the community for upgrades to the park and pool, ball diamond, concession stand and basketball courts. The club also supports local scholarships, and donates to local humanitarian causes with organizations like Family Promise, Green Cares, Badger Honor Flight, and the Christmas Stocking Fund for families in need.

New Glarus New Glarus Chamber swisstown.com 800.527.6838

Yodeling, alphorns, and fondue…Swiss heritage is on the menu when you spend some time in New Glarus! From festivals to family reunions, to girlfriend getaways or “bike first so you can eat more cheese” weekends, New Glarus has things covered.

Dig in to the roots of the area with a visit to the Swiss Historical Village & Museum. Peek into the original settler's cabin to get an idea of how families in New Glarus lived in the early years. You'll also get an idea of how they made a living – as cheese makers, sausage makers, bee keepers, farmers, textile workers, and more. Downtown New Glarus is everything a downtown should be! It's easily walkable – with fun stores to check out. Cheese shop? Yes! Quilt shop? Of course! Bakery? Yum! There's also on-trend apparel and accessories, home and garden décor, bath and body, toys and games, antiques and vintage, leather and canvas goods, outdoor gear, furniture, jewelry, pottery, and even e-bikes for rent. Eclectic, unusual, and sometimes a bit quirky…the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum is a hidden gem! You've heard of the Smithsonian? Well this is the “Swissonian” with collections curated by world traveler Edwin Barlow. His knack for finding the extraordinary is evident in every room – with folk art, needlework, miniatures, wood carvings and other iconic pieces that harken back to earlier generations in the old country. Fun stuff for kids and families: New Glarus “Cow Parade,” meet the goats at Swissland Mini Golf, sit in the desks in the one-room school house at the Swiss Historical Village, bike the Sugar River Trail. New Glarus also has great parks and a public swimming pool. Fun stuff for adults: See where Spotted Cow beer is made, join friends for wine and wood-fired pizza (and live music on weekends) at Bailey's Run Vineyard, sip a flight of beer on the front porch at Puempel's Olde Tavern, enjoy burgers and live music on the back deck at Toffler's Pub and Grill, and start with specialty cocktails before a special dinner at Kristi's Bistro. Of course, you'll find fondue and Swiss cuisine in New Glarus. But there's also burgers, pizza and pasta, European pub fare, hearty soups and sandwiches, dishes with Mexican influence, ice cream and sweet treats.

on tap in new glarus • what's on tap in new glarus • what's on tap in new glarus • wh OLD BUT NEW TRADITIONS The hills of New Glarus are alive with music! And that music sang out to Greg Long with an invitation to come “home.”

Long didn't grow up in New Glarus. He isn't even Swiss. But he's adopted the village and heritage as if he was born to it. And in so doing, inspires a younger generation to keep the Swiss music alive for years to come. Seven years ago, Long, a Beloit native living in Madison, was at a pivotal life point. Newlywed and wanting a change and place to raise a family, he found himself thinking about his childhood trips to this small village. “It is near Madison, but far away enough that it felt like its own community,” Long said. “It had a strong sense of community. We (Greg and his wife Cassandra) wanted a place with a sense of identity.” While this idyllic bedroom community usually attracts Madison transplants wanting space, and small-town life close to a big city, Long's love for music made it doubly attractive. Music is the heartbeat of New Glarus. Locals passionately play and interpret traditional Swiss songs. It's niche, and a more difficult sell for the younger generation. But Long says this music has something the world needs. “Swiss music is nice because it's happy music,” he said. “It's upbeat. Some people might find that boring, but I love that they're happy about life, camaraderie, friendship, belonging. The melodies are just beautiful.” With a varied musical background, playing bagpipes, guitar and trombone in school, Long quickly found a place in the Swiss music scene. “I kind of just jumped in headfirst, right into the deep end,” he laughed. He sings in the Yodel Club and Mannerchor (men's choir), but quickly says his yodeling is elementary, at best. “Thankfully in the yodeling club, most of us are background singers.” Then there are the bands. From the Swiss folk ensemble D'Schwiizer Gruppe to the brass band Biergarten Specials, there are no lack of opportunities to play. D'Schwiizer Gruppe plays local gigs, with a lineup including Damion Babler, Heinz Mattmann, George Albright, and Long. You'll hear accordions, beutel (a small alphorn) and bass. Biergarten Special, formed by the New Glarus Schools band teacher Amy Doefer, is all about that brass. When the Max Drexler Band retired, Doefer formed this group to continue the German-style brass band tradition. It's a new ensemble, picking up where Drexler left off. Apart from the music, Long can be credited with adding an old, but new, tradition to the calendar: Silvesterchlausen. He joined up with Andy Schulz, George Albright, Ed Brand, Tim Pauli and Joann Cruse to kick off this new fest in 2022. Silvesterchlausen is a rather obscure tradition originating in Appenzell, Switzerland, Once these traditions are gone, it is an uphill battle to revive them and bring them back.

with men and women masked and costumed in natural materials and branches. They parade the streets with cowbells and harmonize in yodeling without words. New Glarus is the only place in the world outside of Switzerland to celebrate this tradition, and Silvesterchlausen 2023 drew a large, enthusiastic crowd of revelers. Long says the trick to keeping the music and festivals going is in engaging a younger audience. To that end, the high school band teaches alphorn, and a children's choir, Kinderchor, is training the next generation of yodelers. “Once these traditions are gone, it is an uphill battle to revive them and bring them back,” Long said. But if new people pick up where others leave off, New Glarus' rich cultural history is safe from extinction. As Greg Long proves, you don't have to be Swiss to be Swiss.

When it comes to cheese, pairing purists gravitate to the tried and true.

Like a charcuterie board with cheese + cured meats. Or cheese + fruit. To that we say been there, done that. Instead, how about something a bit more unexpected...

We shopped the junk food and cookie aisles for all the best snacks – salty, sweet, chewy, crunchy. We chose five types of Green County cheese. And then we invited a group of taste testers to sample. The tasting panel considered harmonies like creamy with creamy, and contrasts like mellow vs spicy. They threw around words like buttery, savory, and wow. Shown are five combos that made the final cut. Voila! A pairing palooza to please every palate.

Brodhead BRODHEAD CHAMBER brodheadchamber.com 608.897.8411

If you want to get lost in nature, or go back in time to relive history, or just enjoy some family fun – then Brodhead is the place to be! Some of Brodhead's busiest volunteers have worked many

hours to establish the Pearl Island Recreational Corridor. From bird watching to biking, and fishing to hiking, there are so many ways to enjoy some “island time.” A map on page 31 will get you started. The Sugar River State Trail is right nearby. Brodhead's history is best explained with a visit to the restored depot downtown – home to the Brodhead Historical Society. Start there, and then explore some options to sip, savor, and shop. Check out 608 The Factory (home décor, scents, apparel), Pinnow Hometown Pharmacy (home décor, gifts), and Gunny&Co (hand-poured candles, wax melts, dip mixes). It's Bridges Bar & Grill for family favorites and Friday Fish Fry; Rock n Rollz for salads, sandwiches and pizza; Villa Pizza Inn for pizza, pasta; and Public Houzz (farm to table, specialty cocktails). Piggly Wiggly has a great selection of food to go. Brodheadchamber.com has a complete list of members. When it comes to community spirit, the Brodhead Chamber of Commerce leads the way with signature events like Family Fest in June (tons of free games and entertainers for kids, live music, food and fireworks), or Autumnfest in October (chili cookoff contest, pumpkin decorating, trick or treat and costume parade). There's also Covered Bridge Days in August with tractor pulls and shows, pontoon boat rides, and the Wild Flower Art Festival. Check out the big-name entertainment: returning favorite Madison County and new – Bella Cain, with hot top country hits. And nothing kicks off the holiday season better than Brodhead's Fire and Ice Festival in December. Chainsaw artists carve ice, fire twirlers spin flaming sticks, kids decorate cookies, and there's also a lighted parade and fun contests for kids and adults. The popular Twilight in the Park concert series offers up a variety of musical genres, with shows downtown in Veterans Park every Sunday evening from June 18 through August 13. Fun stops just outside of town: Decatur Dairy – amazing grilled cheese sandwiches, fresh curds, award-winning cut-to-order cheese; Ten Eyck Orchard – apples, pumpkins, honey; Kelch Aviation Museum – step back in time to the golden age of aviation; and Three Waters Reserve – explore the nature trails.

SQUEAKY CURDS WIN THE WORLD Steve Stettler's cheese curds are the best in the world. Literally. Stettler, award-winning Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker and owner of Decatur Dairy Inc. in Brodhead, recently added “World Champion Cheese Curds” to his resume. And anyone who has ever tasted these curds knows the title fits. Decatur Dairy curds have that perfect “squeak,” a sign they're made just right. “People love cheese curds because they're squeaky, fresh, and have that hint of salt,” Stettler said. “But most people would say it's the squeak. It's the PH and the freshness of the cheese and the moisture content. It's getting all three of them in balance to give them the squeak. AND, good milk.” It's the PH and the freshness of the cheese and the moisture content. It's getting all three of them in balance to give them the squeak. Not surprisingly, Wisconsin cheesemakers swept the awards for the first ever cheese curds category at the 2022 World Championship Cheese Contest. The squeaky little nuggets are a cultural phenomenon, whether fresh or fried. Curds from Decatur Cheesemakers also took top honors at last year's Wisconsin State Fair. But Stettler's been lobbying for cheese curd credibility in other ways. He asked the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research to make curds an official

Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker certification, and in 2019 he was the first to receive the new certification. Creating award-winning cheeses isn't easy. It takes a lifetime of learning, a passion for what you do, and work ethic. Stettler comes by all three honestly. A third-generation cheesemaker, he started as a teenager more than 50 years ago at Farmer's Grove Cheese Factory outside New Glarus. He quickly made it his chosen profession and bought into the family business at just 19 years old. In 1982, five years after moving to Brodhead, Stettler and his wife bought Decatur Dairy. After first learning to make Swiss, Stettler moved on to producing Havarti, Muenster, Brick, and Gouda. Decatur Dairy also operates a popular store where customers can taste and buy cheese cut to order. It's worth a trip just to sample those award-winning curds, available at Decatur Dairy in up to 15 tasty flavor varieties on any given day. Not one to rest on his laurels, Stettler and Decatur Dairy are breaking new ground for cheesemakers and farmers, with a major expansion to the cheese factory, which is owned by the farmers. The more than 50 farm families who provide Decatur Dairy with fresh milk every day come from just a 55 mile radius.

Covered Bridge Days August 11 - 13

Stettler said it's a win-win. “The farmers are assured a market for their milk, and we have a quality place to manufacture cheese.” While cheesemaking in Green County is revered, it's a hard business. The hours are long and the work grueling. “Anytime you get somebody wanting to learn cheesemaking, it's a big accomplishment,” Stettler said. Fortunately, a fourth generation of the Stettler family is waiting in the wings to take up the family business. The cheese business is a business that Stettler never takes for granted. “Green County has so much talent in cheesemaking, for us to be considered amongst them, that's pretty incredible.”

VILLAGE OF ALBANY albanywi.org 608.862.3240

If you're looking for the sweetest spot on the Sugar River, it's the village of Albany. From the early days of mills using water power, to today's outdoor recreation opportunities and events – it's the river that keeps things running.

Visitors and locals enjoy the water for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, as well as ice fishing in winter. Hot summer days bring the crowds for cool float trips on tubes. Several outfitters – like Sweet Minihaha Campground – offer tube rentals and shuttle service. For an adventure on land, check out the Sugar River State Trail. Go south to roll through scenic farmland all the way to Brodhead. Go north to ride over the river and through the Albany Wildlife Area on a series of wooden bridges. The wildlife area is open for public hunting, fishing, and trapping. Albany is also open to ATV and UTV users on designated streets; drivers must be 16 or over with a valid driver's license. Enjoy the view in downtown Albany from one of these favorite scenic spots: Sugar River Overlook Park (across from the library), on the bridge overlooking the river, or from the vantage point of your kayak floating downstream. For a bird's eye view of Albany's best fall colors, go to page 4. Albany is small in size but big on community pride. Many activities are centered on school and church. Community volunteers step up to make a difference with groups like the Fire Department and EMS, Lions Club, and FFA Alumni. The Albany Chamber is an organization promoting the small town atmosphere and events like the annual holiday tree lighting. Here's a newer event for your calendar – Albany Riverfest. Held in mid August, the third annual Riverfest pulls out all the stops when it comes to family fun. On the schedule are live music and street dances, and good food like the American Legion chicken BBQ and the EMS fish fry. Tournaments include fastball softball, bags, and mud volleyball – right in the river! It's River Rats vs. Buffalos for a kickball challenge with the kids. All ages are welcome for the crazy bed races on main street, and there's a parade on Sunday.

OVER THE RIVER AND TO THE FEST The meandering Sugar River cuts through downtown Albany with authority. Sounds of running water punctuate life here, and lines to rent inner tubes snake down the street in summer. It's a peaceful scene that packs a punch, bringing life and fun to this small community not far south of Madison. Two years ago, the Albany Chamber, in partnership with local businesses, launched Riverfest. Overcoming the insurmountable odds of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverfest took off. David Gavin, Albany Chamber treasurer, said the overnight success was surprising and a big win for the Chamber. The fledgling organization has seen growth in recent years, largely due to more community involvement. When Gavin and his husband moved here in 2006, they knew no one and had never even heard of Albany. But the town's charm stole their hearts. It's that charm that gives Albany an edge. Future growth is inevitable, and Gavin said the Chamber is ready to pave the way with events like Riverfest. Held the third weekend in August, Riverfest is a community event any tourist would love. From cornhole tournaments to volleyball and softball games, it's that typical small-town fest with a twist. The twist being canoe races, mud volleyball in the river, and even bed races. Not to mention the requisite live music and brats and hamburger stands. “It is definitely growing,” Gavin said, and added that the Chamber provides marketing and volunteer support as well. Plans are in place to expand the festival to include bigger name bands and more food options. The Chamber is also implementing new initiatives and actively recruiting members. Gavin designed the new website albanychamber.com

Partnerships are key. From the town government, to library, schools, and Green County Development Corporation, tapping into resources and presenting a united front can only bring growth. “Previously, there was nobody (from the Chamber) working in the other subcommittees around town,” Gavin said. “We've come together and done marketing for them.” The chamber promotes the local farmers market and hosted an Earth Day event with the library. “We want to work with the village board and encourage downtown businesses,” Gavin said. “We've networked with the community as a whole and we're hoping to get even more involvement. We have a good start, but we need more.”

Start your cheesy visit to Monroe with a stop at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. You can walk right into an original one-kettle farmstead factory where giant Swiss wheels were made using old world techniques, tools and traditions.

Main Street Monroe mainstreetmonroe.org 608.328.4023

In the early years, factories here churned out Limburger, Brick, Block Swiss, and Wheel Swiss. Today you can sample hundreds of varieties. Chalet Cheese Cooperative is the only Limburger producing factory in the US. Exclusive to Monroe is Emmi Roth World Champion Grand Cru – available at Alp and Dell Cheese Store. Maple Leaf Cheese Store stocks local favorites including Odyssey Feta from Klondike Cheese. Tours are available at Minhas Craft Brewery. Check out their collection of memorabilia from breweries around the world. Across the street is Minhas Kitchen and Winery. The Minhas Distillery also recently partnered with rocker Gene Simmons (bassist for the band KISS) to create MoneyBag Vodka. Stop in at Bullquarian Brewhouse, a two-barrel nano brewery in downtown Monroe. The Bullquarian calendar is full of live music events. For the best of the area's music, visual, and performing arts – it's Monroe Arts Center. MAC hosts a popular outdoor summer concert series. Enjoy “wine with a view” at Hawk's Mill Winery west of Monroe near Browntown. There's a tasting room and outside deck, a big lawn, and pavilion. Bring your chairs and enjoy live music on many weekends. Their location next to Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area (map on page 55) extends the scenic view. If you're looking for green space, one of the best ways to explore is by bike, ATV, or UTV. See the map on page 37 for trail maps. Most streets in Monroe are now also open to ATV and UTV traffic. Monroe is a great place to live, work, and visit. Main Street Monroe fills the calendar with fun things to do – like wine walks, parades, car shows, and outdoor concerts. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce puts the spotlight on businesses and supports “shop local” by hosting the annual State Line Home Expo. Stay awhile: camping at the Green County Fairgrounds, three motels, and a unique farm-stay adventure with horses and a friendly herd of Brown Swiss cows. Speaking of Brown Swiss cows, if you'd like to see them on parade you'll want to plan ahead for the next Green County Cheese Days Festival on September 20-22 in 2024.

Downtown Monroe is for architecture lovers. With an entire district listed on the National Register for Historic Places, the Square and its environs boasts one of the state's most spectacular collections of Victorian-era buildings. MAIN STREET MONROE: REVIVING, RESTORING & RENEWING

Like jump-starting a $500K restoration project to be completed this year on one of the Square's largest buildings. The “White Block Building” dates back to 1900 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Its massive 14,000 square footage make it daunting to restore. “We (Main Street) worked with new building owners to make them aware of a grant opportunity and helped write the grant,” Nordby said. A $250K matching WEDC Community Development Investment Block grant was awarded for façade restoration.

Green County's 1891 historic Romanesque style courthouse anchors this classic downtown. A very definite air of nostalgia for the golden age of main street America permeates the atmosphere. But don't let its past fool you. This town's history anchors the present and future. On any given day, parking spots are scarce, and stores and restaurants thrive. Thanks in large part to the district's 18-year-old Main Street program, building restorations are ongoing, occupancy hovers near 100 percent, and a new generation is discovering the joy of shopping small.

It's the first such grant awarded in Monroe or Green County, a major win for Main Street and Monroe. In addition to tuckpointing and other exterior improvements, the new owners plan to add office space and retail storefronts to maximize the building's potential. “This project is a game changer,” Nordby said. “It's addressing the real needs and concerns of the community: improved and more available office and

retail space.” The $500K project is a first step. Nordby anticipates more restoration to the building over the next few years. Improvements on a smaller scale also continue to bring buildings back to their original glory. Like last year's over $20K façade restoration on the current Sunrise Donut Café building. Main Street Monroe's leadership in restoration taps into the state's design services for historic downtowns, offering help This project is a game changer. It's addressing the real needs and concerns of the community: improved and more available office and retail space. “ with design guidelines, façade renderings for improvements, streetscape renderings for public spaces, and more. Last year eight businesses used this expertise. In addition, a new awning and signage grant fund offers local businesses help with cosmetic improvements. It all adds up to a bright future for these architectural gems, and a new generation of businesses. “We're just starting to hit our stride,” Nordby said. “There's going to be a lot more to celebrate in the coming years.”

“One of my favorite things is that we're one of the few communities in Wisconsin with a proper square,” said Jordan Nordby, Executive Director for Main Street Monroe. “It's not just the courthouse. The entire district is filled with beautifully preserved buildings with different architectural details that pique your curiosity.” Most buildings date from the late 1800s to early 1900s and show off the era's architectural styles including Gothic Revival, Richardsonian Romanesque, Neoclassical, and more. The old jailhouse, now a bar, is Italianite and dates from 1855. As always, the artistry is in the details. Fanciful Victorian ornamentation, decorative brickwork, and beautifully preserved glazed terra-cotta tile facades, tell a tale of the city's affluence and industry. Fortunately, Monroe's downtown survived the late 20th Century turn to strip malls, big-box stores, and outlying business hubs. But interest started to flag in the late 90s. Becoming a designated Main Street community was a game changer. Main Street Monroe, a non-profit organization with national accreditation, uses a 4-point approach for revival, restoration, and renewal. It's a labor of love for Nordby. “So much of the work Main Street Monroe does is behind the scenes,” he said. “I'm proud that not only are we a resource for protecting and sharing Monroe's history, but we're a catalyst for change.”
