9.7.2014 SPSFAM Meeting Book - page 52

Konings and Arora led the group in a discussion of prioritization of food safety/adulteration/food fraud
topics, the gaps in the topics and the tools available to address them.
9
After a thorough discussion of a number of topics, the group narrowed them down to the following:
x
Heavy Metals
x
Mycotoxin Screening
x
Speciation of Arsenic and Mercury
x
Non-Targeted Analysis Guidelines
x
Honey Adulteration
x
DNA for Quality Assurance of Food Materials
x
Meat speciĞƐ
x
Sampling Plans
x
Allergens
The heavy metals category was split into two topics – the “big four” (Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic and
Mercury) as well as Speciation of Arsenic and Mercury. It was determined that decisions on microbiology,
pesticides, mycotoxins, and DNA for quality assurance of food materials would all be deferred to the
September when the right people were in the room to discuss these topics. The group agreed that Heavy
Metals, Heavy Metal Speciation, Honey adulteration, and Meat ƐƉĞĐŝĞƐ should become the immediate
priorities for this panel.
6. Next Steps
Konings summarized that, subject to Advisory Panel agreement, this panel can continue with Heavy Metals
and start on honeyadulteration and meat speciĞƐ. The September 2014 meeting could be the right time for a
working group launch on these topics. The other topics will also be reviewed and addressed at the September
meeting. Wehling added that validation guidelines for non-targeted methods are critical to all of these
efforts and that there is an opportunity for AOAC to provide leadership in that area as well – potentially this
could tie into the meat group.
Konings also reminded the group to submit their suggestions for a new panel name using the electronic form
provided in the meeting book.
7. Adjournment
Arora thanked the panel for a productive discussion and stated that these findings will go back to the
advisory panel for a decision.
Motion by Royce to adjourn the meeting. Second by Bhandari.
20 in favor, 0 against, 0 adjourn. The meeting adjourned at approximately 3:00 p.m. EST.
