Basilicata
, Italy
Winery Overview
The Bisceglia (pronounced: be-SHAYL-yah) estate is an important and dynamic winery offering a range of top
quality products. After many years in the corporate food industry, Mario Bisceglia returned to his land to begin this
adventure and founded the estate in 2001. His goal is to continually produce world class wines made with both
indigenous and international varietals grown in the Basilicata region.
Location of Vineyard
The Bisceglia estate is situated on the lower slopes of the extinct volcano, Mount Vulture, in the splendid district of
Lavello. This old farming community is officially recognized as “Wine Town” in the Basilicata region of southern Italy.
The winery itself was designed by internationally acclaimed architects, Hikaru Mori and Domenico Santomauro, and
has state-of-the-art winemaking facilities and aging cellars. The estate extends over pristine hillsides rich in flora and
fauna, characterized by a Mediterranean mesoclimate. A natural balance of temperature shifts characterizes this
terroir
, conferring remarkable fertility to calcareous and clay loam soils.
Winemaking Philosophy
Bisceglia comprises 99 acres of vines in the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture DOCG appellation, which include local
varieties – Aglianico, Moscato and Fiano as well as a selection of international vine varieties.
Calabria
, Italy
Winery Overview
In the 1950s, after growing grapes for four generations, the Librandi family decided to produce and bottle their own
wines. Company management has remained firmly in the family’s hands, while Donato Lanati, professor of oenology
at the Universities of Turin and Florence, is the consulting winemaker.
Location of Vineyard
Librandi is located in Cirò Marina, a small town in the southern Italian region of Calabria (Italy’s boot tip), on
the splendid Ionian coastline. The soil in this area is naturally suited for grape growing and the geographic
position, located between the sea and the Sila Mountains, guarantees an excellent balance between day and
nighttime temperatures.
Winemaking Philosophy
All Librandi wines and olive oils are made exclusively from estate grown grapes and olives. The Librandi family owns
a total of 890 acres – 573 are vineyards, 247 olive groves with the remainder dedicated to the forest. The vineyards
are planted with both local varietals (Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Mantonico), and international varietals. Librandi also
runs an experimental vineyard with ancient local varietals.
