Potable and sanitary water in hospitals and
the use of stainless steel press-fittings
When dealing with large plumbing
systems, press fittings are of interest
due to their qualities and speed of
installation. Adding in the hygienic
qualities of AISI 316L stainless steel
makes a suitable system for potable and
sanitary water in hospitals.
From a sanitary point of view, AISI
316L stainless steel does not release
any substances that could alter the
qualities of potable water. The smooth
walls of pipes and fittings made with
the material do not allow bacteria
to grow and proliferate inside the
system.
With Eurotubi’s Pressfitting system, the
resistance over time and speed in
creating the junctions (on average about
50 per cent less than for traditional
systems) are important factors when
building crucial structures such as
hospitals.
Unlike welded fittings, the installation of
press fittings does not require the use
of chemical substances that could be
hazardous to human health.
Patients in hospitals are often already
weakened by illness, so maximum
hygiene is required in potable
and sanitary water. In this regard,
sanitising treatments with chlorine-
based substances must be performed
periodically on the systems. The AISI
316L stainless steel used in Eurotubi
press fittings offers significant resistance
to deterioration that can result from the
passage of these sanitising substances.
One of the most hazardous bacteria that
can proliferate inside hospital systems
is Legionella pneumophila, which
can reach into water pipes, medical
equipment andair conditioningsystems.
The bacteria have a stronger effect on
those who are already weakened, such
as patients in hospitals. In addition to
periodic sanitising intervention, the use
of stainless steel pipes and surfaces
is one of the most effective solutions
to prevent the formation of the ideal
conditions for the growth of the
bacteria.
Creating fittings with Eurotubi’s press
fitting system is a relatively quick
process, but they must be performed
according to the requirements in the
Eurotubi Pressfitting Technical Manual.
AISI 316L stainless steel press fittings
resist the passage of chlorine-based
solutions for disinfection of the
system, provided that the dispensers
are efficiently calibrated and regularly
inspected.
