Discovering Germany

Tax

In Germany, dogs have to be registered and an annual tax (

Hundesteuer

) must be paid for

them. After the tax has been paid, the owner receives a dog license disk (

Hundemarke

)

which must be attached to the dog’s collar. The license can be obtained from the local town

hall (

Rathaus, Gemeinde,

or

Stadtverwaltung

). It is also recommended to purchase a dog or

cat liability insurance in the case that one’s dog or cat causes an accident or injury.

It must be noted that tenants in rented accommodation may not be permitted to keep pets. It

is also common for dogs to be leashed in public spaces. You may also find that certain areas

or cities have specific leashing rules so be sure to check near your home.
