Ha’penny Bridge
Ha’penny Bridge opened in
the early 19
th
century. Before
the Bridge, a ferry took people
and goods from one side
of the river to the other. The ferry
was always overcrowded, and
usually leaked as well. At the time
when the Bridge was built it cost
a ha’penny to cross over to the
other side, the exact same price
as the ferry had been. Even after
the Bridge was opened the paid
fee went to the owner of the ferry,
and he could retire.
Ha’penny is the first pedestrian
bridge to cross the Liffey, and it
remained as the only pedestrian
bridge until the opening of
the Millenium Bridge in 1999.
When the ha’penny, at the time
known as Liffey Bridge,
first opened, around 450 people
walked across ever day. Today
an average of 30.000 people cross
the Bridge every day.
