frica’s leading manufacturer of energy efficient lu-
minaires, BEKA Schréder, is set to launch its new
Roughguard LED industrial luminaire into the local
market at the upcoming Electra Mining Africa 2016 exhibi-
tion taking place in Johannesburg in September.
The Roughguard LED has been designed to be used
in industrial corrosive and harsh environments. It will be
manufactured using high-pressure die-cast marine grade
aluminium with a robust clear polycarbonate diffuser. The
vandal-proof polycarbonate diffuser is secured
to the body by six stainless steel Allen head
tamper-proof screws.
With applications such as police and prison
cells, railway stations, underground parking ar-
eas, mining workshops and others, where van-
dalism and corrosive elements are prevalent, the
Roughguard LED will be able to withstand these
environments and provide light exactly where it
is needed.
The Roughguard LED has been designed to
provide ease of installation and maintenance. All
control gear components are mounted on the
gear tray. The gear tray can be removed by loos-
ening four Allen head screws in keyhole slots,
which allow the gear tray to be relieved into a
suspended position. This allows the technician to
replace any damaged component with the lumi-
naire still mounted in position.
Customers can choose optional features
which include
• Dimming (0% - 100%);
• Emergency versions – 1hour; and
• Tamper-proof screws, and many combina-
tions, depending on the application.
The Roughguard LED is the ultimate solution
available in the industrial market today for light-
ing up harsh public and private spaces into more
sustainable, safer and convivial environments.
To preview the Roughguard LED with all its
different features, visit the BEKA Schréder stand,
number A9 in Hall 7 at Electra Mining Africa
2016 from 12 to 16 September, Expo Centre
Nasrec, Johannesburg, South Africa.

FACTOR OUT
FLICKER
NEW LED LUMINAIRE
FOR HARSH AND
CORROSIVE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
“O
ne of the issues that can
occur with flat panels
is their tendency to
flicker. And in a commercial office
or educational environment this can
result in health implications and a
problematic working environment,”
says Warwick Webber, Aurora’s
managing director for South Africa.
He explains that the human eye is
sensitive to flickering light and, when
exposed to it daily, it can lead to
headaches, fatigue, blurred vision,
eye-strain and reduced visual task
performance and distraction.
“So, although lumens and hours
are important factors for customers
when choosing LED panels, there
are other key features that should
not be ignored,” he says.
“Basically, there are two forms of
flicker,” explains Webber. “Percent-
age flicker is the ac power frequen-
cy-related light fluctuation and is
measured as the amplitude vari-
ation between the maximum and
minimum values. Flicker index is
a more efficient calculation as it
includes differences in waveform
shape and is caused by incompat-
ibility of the light source to LED
driver and/or switch.”
Replacing traditional light sources
with more efficient and longer-last-
ing LED-based solid-state lighting
(SSL) is an undeniable trend in the
lighting industry and, like fluores-
cent and HID, LED lighting is directly
connected to the ac power supply
at 50 Hz. However, unlike conven-
tional sources, solid state lighting
is a direct current (dc) device. This
means that as long as constant cur-
rent is supplied, the LED will illuminate
without flicker but may still suffer from
ripple, which is caused by the rectifica-
tion of ac to dc.
“Standards are unclear in terms of
maximum acceptable flicker in LED
light sources, particularly at the lower
end of the dimming scale. Many driv-
ers in the market place have a simple
or poor circuit design to minimise cost
at the detriment of flicker, but remov-
ing flicker whilst still maintaining a
high power factor in excess of 0.9
without compromising costs is a focus
of the Enlite range,” he says.
The new ultra-slim Enlite E6060
and E1260 LED flat panels have been
engineered with an edge-lit design and
optical pattern light guide for even
light distribution and also come with a
flicker-free driver.
The ranges can be found on page
26 of the Enlite Edition 4 catalogue.
