DEXA - A new tool for measuring body

composition & dangerous fat

By Angus Steventon

I

t’s no surprise the Australian weight

loss industry generates approximately

$614 million in revenue each year,

when approximately 64% of Australians

are overweight or obese. Expensive gym

memberships, personal training sessions,

protein powders, fat burners and other

costly concoctions are just some of the

methods you might try. Yet after a few

weeks of exercise and disciplined eating

you’ve only dropped a paltry 1 kg on the

bathroom scales! What is going on there?

The motivation wavers— doubt slips in.

Was it worth all the pain? Was anything

achieved?

Thankfully, the Central Coast has a

new tool that can show exactly what you

are achieving when you set about losing

weight. A DEXA scan can tell you your

body composition— your exact body fat

percentage, how many kilos of fat you are

losing, and how many kilograms of muscle

you are gaining. It turns out your scales lied

to you! You didn’t lose just 1 kg of fat, after

all. You actually lost 3 kg of fat and gained

2 kg of muscle! That’s certainly a lot more

motivating!

Obesity statistics are shocking. Around

4% of cancers in men and 7% in women are

directly attributable to obesity. The most

dangerous of this fat is the abdominal

“visceral fat”, which is the “hidden fat” you

can’t see or grab that lurks around your

organs. A DEXA scan can tell you exactly

how much of this dangerous fat you have, so

that you can set about reducing it, thereby

decreasing your risk for not only cancer,

but also diabetes, heart disease and even

Alzheimer’s disease.

A DEXA scan and subsequent consultation

with our Accredited Practising Dietitian and

Sports Nutritionist will give you a detailed

report, outlining your:

• Body fat percentage

• Muscle mass

• Bone weight and density

• Visceral (abdominal) fat

• Metabolic rate (how many calories you

consume, each day, at rest)

Our Sports Nutritionist will work with you

to put together the food you need to fuel

your body to be working at its best. The DEXA

scan provides a snapshot of where you are

now, to educate and motivate you on your

journey towards health and wellness.
