Records dropped like rain in1981, as

the University ofSan Diego's football

team gained national recognition in

posting a 9-1-0 record, the finest in

school history. Fourteenrecords in all

were broken, and the team saw them­

selves ranked as high as seventh in the

weekly national polls. Senior running

back Joe Henry broke the all-time pass

reception record. Quarterbacks Steve

Loomis and Eric Sweet shared the hon­

or of breaking the single game comple­

tions record with twenty-one apiece.

The line was anchored by tight-end

Mike Ledbetter and tackle Kiha Terrel.

Mike Rish was the topreceiver as the

offensive passinggame surpassed3,000

yards.

Defensively, free safety Dan Herbert

broke the single season interception re­

cord shagging eightand leading apass

defense that picked off twenty-six in

setting anotherschool record. Herbert

was also honored with the distinction of

being namedKodak All-American, and

he represented USD in the prestigious

Olympia Gold Bowl All-Star game.

Nose guard Bruce Ognibene led the

team in quarterback sacks. Leadership

and inspiration were provided by senior

linebacker Gary Newberry andcorner-

back Charlie "Pig"Pillon.

The special teams, always a USD cor­

nerstone, were lead by kicker Bobby

Lozzi's eleven field goals, and kick re­

turners Emmitt Dodd and Ron Guz­

man. Congratulations to Coach Wil­

liams andhis team for a fine year.
