Dauntsey ’s School

DAUNTSEY’S School is

delighted to announce an

impressive line-up of speakers

for the 2016/17 programme of

its renowned Mercers’

Lecture series.

The Mercers’ Lectures are

named in recognition of the

links between Dauntsey’s and

the Mercers’ Company, which go

back to Mercer founder Alder-

man William Dauntsey, Master

of the Worshipful Company of

Mercers, who founded the school

in West Lavington in 1542.

Speakers this term include:

September 21

– Sir Tim Smit

KBE, founding director of the

award-winning Eden Project,

near St Austell, Cornwall.

Eden opened its doors to the

public in 2000, since when

around 15m people have come to

see what was once a sterile pit

turned into a cradle of life

containing world-class horticul-

ture and startling architecture,

symbolic of human endeavour.

October 12

– Lucy Hawking is a

renowned author who uses

story-telling to help audiences

understand and engage with

science.

She has collaborated with

several distinguished scientists

in her books, including her

father, the theoretical physicist

Stephen Hawking.

November 9

– Sarah Outen

MBE is a world-record-breaking

adventurer, published author

and inspirational speaker.

Sarah rowed into the

Guinness

Book of Records

aged 24 with her

world-first 124-day solo row

across the Indian Ocean.

In the Spring Term 2017, the

school will also welcome

Mariella Frostrup, Sir John

Sawers GCMG, Professor AC

Grayling and Jeremy Bowen for

their Mercers’ Lectures.

All lectures commence at 7.30pm

and will be held in either the

Memorial Hall or The Pavilion

at Dauntsey’s.

Please book your free tickets

Headmaster Mark Lascelles

said: “The Mercers’ Lectures are

central to encouraging our

pupils to engage with world

affairs and think beyond the

confines of their academic

curriculum.

“This year we look forward to

welcoming a diverse range of

eminent speakers covering the

environment, science, the arts,

philosophy, world conflict and

adventure.

This year’s lecture series will be

a highlight for the school and I

hope for our local community as

well.”

St Andrew’s School

THE St Andrew’s Pre-Prep and

Nursery is a wonderful place

for children to start their

educational journey.

The teaching team is dedicated to

encouraging all the children to

reach their full potential so they

grow into well-rounded, confident

and independent learners ready

for the move into the prep school.

The Pre-Prep and Nursery are

based in their own buildings

opposite the main school, giving

the children the benefit of their

own working environment and

the ability to use the school’ s

wider facilities.

Learning and playing outdoors

also plays an important part of

life at St Andrew’s, so all the

pupils make good use of the acres

of woodlands and playing fields.

The school encourages a love of

learning across a wide spectrum;

English and mathematics are

interspersed with science, music,

yoga, hockey, art and drama.

All of these can be taught within

a hands-on lesson where original-

ity is encouraged and life skills

are developed.

Throughout the school staff look

to develop the pupils’ intellectual

character by focusing on collabo-

ration, curiosity, initiative,

resilience, responsibility, empa-

thy and reflectiveness.

The team want children to come

into St Andrew’s with a smile and

an air of excitement and expecta-

tion.

Many parents, when they visit,

wish they had been taught in this

way – in an environment where

learning is made fun.

This philosophy carries on into

the Prep school where boys and

girls aged seven to 13 continue to

flourish in an environment where

they are encouraged to develop

independent thought and learn-

ing through discovery.

St Andrew’s has an outstanding

reputation in preparing pupils for

their first-choice senior school

with many scholarships won.

The 30 pupils from last term’s

Year 8 will be joining 11 diferent

senior schools, having won 14

awards.

St Andrew’s is referred to in

The

Tatler

and

Good Schools Guides

as: “a little gem, a diamond of a

school that no one knows about.

“St Andrew’s have been British

Schools Orienteering Associa-

tion champions for three consec-

utive years, started an intellec-

tual-character initiative to

promote positive thinking and is

the first Prep school to start

Young Enterprise.

“A small, family school that is a

big player in a wide selection of

sports and the music is first

class.”

Headmaster Mr Jonathan Bartlett

would like to invite you to visit

his thriving school, where chil-

dren can be children with enough

time in their day to explore the

grounds through play and where

high standards are achieved in a

low-pressured environment.
