OUTSIDE LEGAL SERVICES (SPECIAL COUNSEL)
For certain kinds of specialized or time-intense legal work that would impact other responsibilities of the City Attorney's
Office, the City Attorney engages special legal counsel.
Legal costs for the general liability fund are payments made to outside counsel up to the city's deductible of $100,000 per
claim. Claims and litigation are unpredictable and represent the major variable in projecting legal costs.
In the Housing Mitigation Fund, legal costs are being incurred to pursue violations of City's Below Market Rate housing
program restrictions. The amounts recovered and the value of the units retained through legal action is anticipated to
exceed the legal costs incurred.
Total costs for all outside legal services (“special counsel”) in the budget and in recent years are shown in the following
table:
