Sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand

ABOARD THE

CALEDONIAN SKY

The vegetation, wildlife, and landscapes of New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic

islands are utterly wild and beautiful, and this exciting expedition transects

them all! On nature walks and Zodiac tours, explore the far-flung isles of

the Tasman Sea, whose geographical isolation has shaped their remarkable

biodiversity. The highlight (among many!)—stepping ashore at Macquarie

Island, with its colonies of stately king and royal penguins.

DAYS 1-10 QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD

SOUND / STEWART AND ULVA ISLANDS

/ DUNEDIN / CAMPBELL ISLAND

From

Queenstown, head to Milford Sound and set sail

for Stewart and Ulva Islands, renowned for their

prolific birdlife. Arrive in Dunedin and explore

the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, with its native birds

and reptiles, followed by a visit to the northern

royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. Cruise to

Campbell Island, home to a multitude of seabirds

and marine mammals.

DAYS 11-18 MACQUARIE / ENDERBY /

SNARES ISLANDS

On Macquarie, see colonies

of king, royal, and gentoo penguins, while walks on

Enderby lead to nesting royal albatross. Explore the

Snares Islands, with its breeding sooty shearwaters

and Snares crested penguins. Come full circle to

Queenstown and depart on Day 18.

DAYS 1-5 AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

Explore Auckland’s lovely Domain Park and the

Auckland Museum, which houses the world’s

largest collection of Polynesian artifacts, before

embarking on the ship.

DAY 6-10 ROTORUA / WHITE ISLAND /

NAPIER / WELLINGTON

In Rotorua, visit

Wai-O-Tapu, an active geothermal area with

hot springs. Cruise by Zodiac to White Island,

with its surreal active volcano, and stroll in

elegant Napier, a city of Art Deco architecture.

Enjoy Wellington, the nation’s capital, then

head to the vibrant marine reserve in Nelson.

DAYS 11-20 MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS /

FIORDLAND / QUEENSTOWN

Following

the path of Captain James Cook, you’ll explore

Ship Cove, whale watch in Kaikoura, take a

Zodiac to Ulva Island, and round the southern

edge of the South Island, stopping at the

magnificent fjords and bays of Fiordland, and

ending in Queenstown. Depart on Day 19,

arriving home on Day 20.
