A
s Hollywood's Monsterverse
gets under way with
Kong:
Skull Island
and
Godzilla: King of
the Monsters
(currently shooting
for a 2019 release), the latter
makes a resurgence in his native
Japan in
Shin Godzilla
– out
July 19 as a JB exclusive edition
featuring alternate artwork.
Also exclusive to JB Hi-Fi this month
is the 4K UHD edition of
Ghost in the
Shell
. With its highly stylised visuals
and knockout VFX, it's a perfect fit for
the format and an essential purchase
for fans of the manga – and ScarJo of
course. Out July 26.
Michael Mann's
1995 crime classic
Heat
, starring
Pacino, De Niro and, err, Kilmer
is the hot catalogue title to grab
this month, with a fully loaded
2-disc set hitting the shelves
on July 26.
Steve Martin's
Bowfinger
(1999) is one of the
best – and funniest – movies about moviemaking,
with the veteran comic playing the eponymous
director who surreptitiously shoots footage of
a movie megastar (Eddie Murphy) to boost the
appeal of his new science fiction film.
It's out on July 5 along with another
underrated comedy classic,
Amazon
Women on the Moon
(1987). This
skit-com features segments helmed
by Joe Dante and John Landis
(amongst others), which orbit around
the '50s sci-fi spoof of the title.
On a darker note, Australian crime drama
The Boys
(1998) features an intense central
performance from David Wenham and ranks
alongside
Snowtown
in the annals of disturbing
local cinema. Out July 5.
Also designed to make you
squirm (and want to take a shower
afterwards) is
Let Me Make You
a Martyr
(2016). Goth rocker
Marilyn Manson stars as a hitman
hired by a pair of siblings to take
out their crime boss father in this
gritty southern thriller that's been
favourably compared
Badlands
and
Blood Simple.
Out July 19.
Guillermo del Toro's
The Devil's
Backbone
(2001) is the perfect
companion to his award-winning
Pan's Labyrinth
. Set in an orphanage
during the Spanish Civil War, this
potent combination of gothic ghost
story and childhood innocence lost
is one the director's finest films and
looks exceptional in HD. Out July 5.
The four short films that
comprise horror anthology
XX
(2017) have the
distinction of being written
and directed by women.
Motherhood and monsters are
given terrifying twists in this
unique genre offering featuring
contributions from Roxanne
Benjamin, Karyn Kusama, St.
Vincent, and Jovanka Vuckovic.
Out July 19.
