full-time employees work alternative schedules requiring them to work more than eight hours
per scheduled work day. If a holiday falls on a work day where an employee would normally work
more than eight hours, the employee is required to make up the difference with paid time off. For
example, assume that an employee normally works four, ten-hour work days. If a holiday falls on
the employee’s normally scheduled work day, the employee will receive eight hours of holiday pay
and will be required to use two hours of paid time off to make up the difference. In the alternative,
department directors can adjust the employee’s alternative work schedule to a traditional work
schedule (five, eight-hour work days) for any week with a paid holiday.
Part time employees will be given hours off to observe each designated holiday as follows: four
hours for a PT 20 employee; five hours for a PT 25 employee; or six hours for a PT 30 employee.
5.3 Each year, on a calendar-year basis, the human resources department, with the approval of the
City Manager, will issue a schedule of the days that will be observed for each holiday. See holiday
schedule.
5.4 Each department director shall post in a prominent place, his department’s holiday schedule.
5.5 Policy D-13, Premium Pay contains information concerning pay for working on designated
holidays.
For more information, see the Premium Pay policy on page 138 in Section D.5.6 Sworn police officers and firefighters accrue holiday hours in a different manner than other
