C. After the allowable three weeks of paid sick-family leave for adoption, the employee may

use additional paid time-off and unpaid leave up to the 12 weeks allowed. Police officers and

firefighters may also use accumulated holidays. With the department director’s approval,

the employee may also use departmental advanced annual leave (up to 80 hours for a FT, PT

employees as follows: PT 20, up to forty (40) hours; PT 25, up to fifty (50) hours; or PT 30, up

to sixty (60) hours).

D. If an employee has exhausted all of the paid time-off for which he is eligible (except he may

maintain a balance of 40 hours or less of annual leave for a full time employee; PT 20, twenty

(20) hours or less; PT 25, twenty-five (25) hours or less; or PT 30, thirty (30) hours or less),

he is eligible to use leave without pay for the remainder of the adoption leave. Periods of leave

without pay of one pay period or greater will reduce the employee’s leave accrual and service

bonus payments.

E. During any period of leave without pay, the employee is responsible for paying his share of

health and dental insurance premiums on a monthly basis.

F. In situations where a major illness occurs with the adoptive child, the employee may be

eligible to use additional sick-family leave.

5.3 Foster Care

A. Employees are allowed a period up to 12 weeks during any consecutive 12 months of unpaid

leave to care for a child placed with the employee for foster care. If both parents are City

employees, a total of 12 weeks shared between the two employees is allowed.

B. The employee may be paid for a portion of the foster care leave if he charges the absence

to paid time-off. Police officers and firefighters may also use accumulated holidays. With the

department’s approval, the employee may also use departmental advanced annual leave (up to

80 hours for a FT, PT employees as follows: PT 20, up to forty (40) hours; PT 25 up to fifty

(fifty hours; or PT 30, up to sixty (60) hours).

C. If an employee has exhausted all of his paid time-off (except he may maintain a balance of 40

hours or less of annual leave for a full time employee; PT employees may maintain annual leave

balances as follows: PT 20, twenty (20) hours or less; PT 25, twenty-five (25) hours or less; or

PT 30. thirty (30) hours or less), he is eligible to use leave without pay for the remainder of the

leave for placement for foster care. Periods of leave without pay of one pay period or greater

will reduce the employee’s leave accrual and service bonus payments.
