I. Occupational health

5.6 Safety Policies - Departments, in conjunction with the Safety and Health Manager and

Safety Committee, will be responsible for writing certain policies and procedures for their safety

committees, which should cover items outlined below:

A. Scope of responsibility

B. Extent of authority

C. Establishment of a regular time and place for meeting

D. Development of specific safety rules and procedures which pertain directly to that

department/division

E. Outline procedures for conducting self-inspections of department/division facilities and

equipment

5.7 The committee will meet at least quarterly.

5.8 Safety Committee Responsibilities - Duties of the Department/Division Safety Committees

should be to continuously work toward accomplishing its purpose and would include, but are not

limited to, the following responsibilities:

A. Conduct regular self-inspections of work places, facilities, and equipment noting all safety

hazards observed and violations of established safety standards during the inspections and

follow-up with supervisors on suggested corrections.

1. Conditions noted and steps taken to remedy the situation during these inspections (along

with a time frame for corrections) will be included in the Safety Committee’s report to the

department director or division head.

2. A copy of this report will be forwarded to the Safety and Health Manager.

B. Assist supervisors in the department/division in the active promotion of safety in all work

activities.

C. Provide the opportunity for free discussion of both accident and personal injury problems

and prevention measures.

D. Maintain a helpful and cooperative attitude toward safety between supervisors and

employees.

E. Maintain a safety record display board. This instrument should show lost time injuries and

chargeable vehicle accidents for the department/division.
