CCJV, the joint venture
between Chiyoda and CTCI
Corporation, has placed a
major order for Nexans power
and instrumentation fibre optic
cables for the Laffan Refinery
project.
Nexans will supply over
1,000km of cable, including
low and medium voltage
single
and
multi-core
armoured
IEC
standard
flame-retardant cables. In
2013,
Nexans
provided
1,000km of medium and low
voltage cables for the Barzan
gas processing project.
Charles-Edouard
Mellagui,
country manager and CEO of
Qatar International Cables
Company (QICC), the Nexans
company based in Qatar, said:
“Winning this major contract
for such a high profile and
strategic project is an
important step for the
contribution of the Nexans
group to Qatar 2030 vision
and its underlying will to
accelerate
its
industrial
development.”
For the Laffan Refinery 2
project, Nexans QICC will
design
and
manufacture
around 1,000km of low and
medium voltage, power and
earthing cables, while Nexans
France will provide the
instrumentation and fibre optic
cables. Construction began in
December 2013, and is
expected to be completed in
the third quarter of 2016.

Ellis has a second major order for its Emperor
cable cleats and ProTect cable straps for the
Areva European pressurised reactor (EPR)
nuclear power plant currently being
constructed in the Guangdong province of
China.
The order was placed at the commencement of
the second phase of the Taishan nuclear power
project, which is a joint venture between EDF
and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group.
Tony Conroy, Ellis’s] export sales director, said:
“Even after the success of the phase one
specification, receiving a repeat order for phase
two was far from simple.
“A huge emphasis has been placed on the
various contractors to source local products,
and so it felt like a huge victory to overturn this
directive and once again see British products
being specified for installation in a major
Chinese development.”
Designed for use where the highest levels of
short circuit withstand are required, Ellis’s
Emperor cable cleats are available for both
trefoil and single cable applications, and
manufactured in type 316L stainless steel for
ultimate corrosion protection, even in the
harshest of environments.
The Taishan reactor is the third nuclear power
station to be built using Areva’s 1,750MW EPR
and it is the second time Areva has used Ellis
products to secure electrical cables at a
nuclear plant. The very first specification from
Areva was for its OL3 reactor in Finland in
2009, and was followed in 2013 by the first
phase order for the Taishan project.
