Automated Wire
Production

Wire & Cable ASIA – January/February 2007
president and chairman, the confi-
dence to expand production plans
and to designate additional models
for transfer to China in the future.
Now, a strong Euro and declining
sales in Europe have prompted
Wardwell to accelerate the transfer,
bringing about a shift of production
capacity.
As a result, production from the
both the Berlin and Alfeld plants
in Germany is being transferred to
Wardwell’s plant in Rhode Island
and to its Joint Venture facility in
Shanghai.
Products formerly made by Wardwell
Europe – such as the Dratex, DF,
Fo3 and Unidra braiding models,
and a select line of spiralling and
shielding equipment – will be
available at these plant locations.
“We believe the relocation of
production to more efficient and
better strategically-located facilities
will allow us to be more responsive
to our customers’ needs and reduce
costs significantly,”
said Mr Farnum.
“Wardwell has been trying to
consolidate its operations in Germany
for the past two years, but the difficult
and restrictive legal environment is
not conducive to a fair and planned
exit strategy.”
At full capacity, Wardwell expects
its Joint Venture in China to deliver
new features and models of similar
quality levels and contribute savings
of approximately 40% over Wardwell’s
existing production facilities beginning
in mid-2007.
“We needed a lower cost source for
the equipment currently produced
in Germany, and these initiatives will
make Wardwell more competitive
over the long term and able to
meet customer expectations,”
added
Farnum.
“Although we deeply regret
the necessity of closing Wardwell
Europe, we feel that our customers
will be better served through our Joint
Venture partners in China.”
The Alfeld facility will close
immediately and the date and
details for closing the Berlin facility
are under review. The company
wishes to acknowledge the efforts
and contributions made by its
employees over the past 5 and
12 years, respectively.
Any customer inquiries should be
directed to Wardwell’s usual customer
contacts in Berlin, Central Falls, Milan,
or Shanghai.
