The
un
magical real thing
I did as soon as I got
back from the Ivinghoe
weekend was give in
notice at work. Nobody
tried to persuade me to
stay. I kept quiet about the
changed circumstances in
front of my housemates.
I just want to talk for a
minute about Glea and
Aggie. In my opinion
they had a puerile and
annoying obsession with
names. Goldie Lea was
Glea’s full name but she
dropped the ‘oldie’ part,
maybe seeing it as ageist
and put the G and the Lea
together to become Glea.
And she said she was now
very fond of Glea and
always thought of herself
that way. And Aggie, being
Aggie, that is to say a
person who placates and
agrees with anyone she’s
talking to, said it was a very
natural thing to become
attached to a name. And
then Glea said she was
happy that the Goldie was
there in the background
too as it basically meant a
precious metal and there
was no getting away
from that. And gold was
gorgeous and it kind of
shone out from the inside
and gave a nice warm
glow to everything. She
looked conceited when
she said that. And then
Aggie sidled up to her and
she
looked conceited too
because her proper name
was Aglaia and it meant
she was beautiful and
there was no denying that
either. She was one of
the three Graces in Greek
mythology. Beat that. The
pair of them were full of
self-congratulation and I
thought then, how utterly
