The Indian Institute of Science owes its origin to J.N. Tata who

as far back as 1889 realised the need for a research institute in science

and technology. It was started in 1909 with three departments, 24

students, and 6 members of the academic staff. Today it has 22

departments in both science and engineering faculties, 1029 students,

388 members of the academic staff, 7 senior research fellows and 1315

supporting laboratory, workshop and ministerial staff.

The main object of the Institute is to "provide for advanced

instruction and conduct original investigation in all branches of knowl-

edge and in particular such branches as are likely to promote the

material and industrial welfare of India." The Government of India has

declared the Institute as a "deemed to be university."

The Institute offers a BE course in Computer Science and Auto-

mation and Metallurgy. Admission requirement is a Bachelor's degree

in science (must have physics and maths as part of the curriculum and

for metallurgy, also chem) with first class or equivalent.

For ME, the admission requirement is Bachelor's degree in the

appropriate field of Engg/Tech/Master's degree in physical sciences/

Master's degree in science, economics, psychology, commerce in II

class or Bachelor's degree in Science with II class followed by a pass

in AMIE/Grade/ IETE/ AMIICCLE/ AMIIM/ AMASI.

ForM.Tech (Mgt. studies) the admission requirement is Bache-

lor's degree in the appropriate field of Engg/Tech/Master's degree in

Physical Sciences/ Master's degree in science, economics, psychology

and commerce with II class followed by a pass in AMIE/Grade/ IETE/

AMICC WE/AMIIM/AM AeSI.

The Institute offers an ME (Integrated) course. Admission re-

quirement is a degree in science with maths and physics and for

admission to metallurgy also chemistry with I class.

For M.Sc (Engg) admission requirement is MSc., BE/ B.Tech can

register for course in first instance. If their progress is adequate change

of registration to PhD can be considered at appropriate time.

PhD, BSc degrees are awarded in science faculty including

mathematics.
