science, instrumentation, biological sciences, physics, chemistry,

mathematics, economics, humanities, management, science and tech-

nology development and engineering technology.

All these constitute the integrated First Degree programmes.

The Institute also conducts higher degree programmes like M.E

(collaborative); M. Phil (applied) and M.E/ M. Pharm for profession-

als and are followed by Ph.D programmes.

Indian Institute of Technology,

Delhi-110 016.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was established as

a college of engineering in 1961. The institute was declared an

Institution of national importance with powers to frame its own

academic policy, to conduct its own examinations and to award its

own degrees.

IIT Delhi offers seven 4-year undergraduate programmes lead-

ing to the degree of Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) in Chemical

Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering,

Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Science & Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering and Textile Technology and two 5-year in-

tegrated P.G. programmes in Computer Applications, and Biochemi-

cal Engineering and Biotechnology. At the post-graduate level, the

Institute offers thirty-two 3-semester (l*/

2

years) programmes lead-

ing to the degree of Master of Technology (M. Tech) in various spe-

cialisations in engineering and science (including one in behavioural

and social sciences). The Institute also offers three 2-year post - B.Sc

programmes leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in

Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and a sponsored two-year post-

graduate diploma course in Naval Construction. It also offers re-

search programmes leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy

(Ph.D) in all the departments and centres. The magnitude of the

research activities can be gauged by 722 research papers published

during the year 1987-88 by the faculty, a major proportion being in

reputed journals.

In order to remain at the forefront of the advancement of sci-

ence and technology, the Institute has collaborated with some of the

foremost institutions in UK. The Institute has at the same time

extended academic and research collaboration to several Institutes of

excellence in other industrially advanced countries such as the

United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, USA , Norway, Japan and the

Federal Republic of Germany.

Indian Institute of Technology,

Madras-600 036.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras was established in

1959 and was supported both technically and financially by the

Government of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). The Insti-

tute is acknowledged to have done exceedingly well during the last

three decades in the field of higher technical education, basic spon-

sored research and consultancy.

Support from FRG continues in the form of exchange of scien-

tists and equipment for research facilities at the Institute. A Siemens

fourth generation computer, funded by FRG with about 100 termi-

nals connecting various laboratories, has been installed recently. Fur-

ther, FRG is assisting IIT Madras to improve the research facilities

in the areas of Ocean Engineering, Metallurgy, Catalysis, Electron-

ics, Materials Science and Production Engineering.

Degree courses leading to Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in

Aerospace, Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrical and

Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical and

Metallurgical Engineering, as well as in Naval Architecture and

Post-Graduate programmes leading to Master of Technology

(M. Tech) are offered in almost all engineering branches, while

Master of Science (M.Sc) Degree courses are offered by the Science

departments, i.e Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Master of Science by Research (M.S.) Degree is a research-

oriented Masters Programme offered by all engineering departments.

Doctoral programmes leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy

(Ph.D.) in engineering, sciences and humanities are offered by

various departments of the Institute.

Indian Institute of Technology,

Karagpur-721 302.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was founded

in May 1950 and is the oldest of the five IITs. IIT Kharagpur has

played a pivotal role in developing and disseminating new technical

and scientific knowledge vitally needed for India's economic prog-

ress.

The Institute has at present 18 departments. These include

Aeronautical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering; Architecture

and Regional Planning; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry ; Civil

Engineering ; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engi-

neering; Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering;

Geology and Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical

Engineering; Mining Engineering; Naval Architecture; Physics and

Meteorology; Computer Centre, Cryogenic Engineering; Industrial

Engineering and Management.

Similarly, the Institute has a number of centres such as Mate-

rials Science Centre, Post-Harvest Technology Centre, Radar and

Communication Centre, Reliability Engineering Centre, Rubber Tech-

nology Centre and Rural Development Centre. The Institute has

also developed Central Research Facility (CRF) to provide various

experimental services to its students and staff as well as to outside

organisations. The Institute has a well-developed library.

Indian Institute of Technology,

Bombay 400076.

The Institute was established in 1958. By an Act of Parliament

in 1961 it was declared an Institute of national importance and given

the powers to confer its own degrees and diplomas.

The Institute offers 4 years' undergraduate programmes leading

to B.Tech in aeronautical engineering, chemical engineering, civil

engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical

engineering and metallurgical engineering. For M.Tech the re-

quirement is B.Tech/M.Sc. in relevant branches of engineering and

science or a pass in sections A & B of AME of the Aeronautical

Society of India/Institution of Engineers (India). Indian Institute of

Chemical Engineering candidates must have 60% marks in sections

A & B and have two years' professional experience after passing sec-

tion B.

The Institute also offers an M.Sc. course in Applied Geology,

Biotechnology, Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic, Physical), Maths

(Pure, App, Computer Science, Statistics) and Physics.

The admission requirement for Master of Design course is BE

or B.Arch degree. For admission to M.Des (Visual Communication

and Industrial Design) candidates with GD Art or BFA (App Art)

and professional diploma of NID are also eligible.

It also offers research programmes leading to Ph.D degree.

Indian Institute of Technology,

Kanpur 208016.

IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and has been declared an

Institution of national importance.
