Through these programmes, the Institute hopes to transfer manage-
ment know how, tools and techniques to hitherto under-managed
sectors of the economy.
A special category of the EDP at IIM Bangalore is the
Organisation Based Programme designed specifically to suit the
requirements of individual organisations. Studies of the organisa-
tions are undertaken before a programme is conducted and case
materials are developed based on the company's problems and needs.
RESEARCH INSTITUTES
Indian Council For Research On International
Economic Relations
New Delhi-110 003.
A non-profit making centre for undertaking and organising
policy-oriented research in the field of international economic rela-
tions and development co-operation, the Indian Council for Research
on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) was launched in
1981. The principal aim of the founding members was to apply the
tools of multi-disciplinary research to study national development in
the global context with a view to interpreting and influencing the
domestic, regional and international environment in directions sup-
portive of national goals. Committed to reinforcing and upgrading
research capability in the area of development co-operation, IC-
RIER's principal objectives include:
Undertaking studies and organising conferences and seminars
on different facets of interaction between the international environ-
ment and national development to understand its impact on national
economy and optimise its contribution to the country's economic and
social progress;
Promoting the interaction between researchers and decision-
makers in Government and in industry;
Facilitating intellectual interchange at regional and global levels
on policy options in the area of International Economics.
Focusing attention on problems of foreign trade, industrial
expansion, technology transfer, fiscal and monetary management,
and development co-operation at national, sub-regional, regional and
international levels;
Promoting and conducting scientific research on socio-eco-
nomic and politico-economic issues of concern to industrial and
other entrepreneurs and corporate managers, especially in the areas
affected by the impact of international forces on the national econ-
omy.
ICRIER has entered into an exchange programme with the
New York University, Stony Brook, USA, for exchange of scholars
to undertake research in areas of mutual interest. The exchange
programme with the London School of Economics and the Univer-
sity of Oxford envisages joint collaboration between ICRIER, LSE
and QEH to study selectively chosen areas of common interest.
There are some other research collaborative arrangements such
as those with the University of Toronto, Canada and the University
of Denmark, Copenhagen, which have been initiated recently. Pos-
sibilities of collaborations with several other institutions are being
explored.
National Council of Applied Economic Research
Director-General,
New Delhi-110 002.
The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER),
is a national institution that undertakes significant research which
has relevance to the country's economic development. It is the only
such organisation in the field of applied economics in India whose
research is directly related to the country's development problems
and policies. The major part of NCAER's research is sponsored by
Government institutions (Centre and States), public or private sector
organisations and international agencies. NCAER also undertakes,
on its own initiative, non-sponsored research in areas which in its
judgment are of national importance.
NCAER is an independent, non-profit making institution. It
aims at providing objective research inputs into the development
process. For all research done for sponsors, it only charges the ac-
tual costs. It is, therefore, a purely research institution and not a
consultancy agency.
NCAER has done pioneering research work, particularly in the
areas of regional development and planning, household income,
consumption, savings/investment, and energy. Often research studies
entrusted to NCAER include surveys for the generation of primary
dat£. This has led to its specialising in the conduct of a variety of
field surveys. In particular, it has built up a high level of expertise
in conducting household surveys. By March 1990, the Council had
conducted 549 surveys with varying spatial and population coverage
and sample size. One of its largest surveys was undertaken for the
World Bank and involved a sample of 23,000 households spread
over every "tehsil" (sub-district) in the country. Since 1986, NCAER
has conducted a survey of consumption expenditure of households,
using a sample frame of 500,000 households which is also the
sample list for consumer durables, and a sample of 16,000 house-
holds for consumables. This survey, for the first time, gives a break-
up of the market structure for different products, by states, income,
occupation, etc.
Research and Information System For The Non-aligned and
Other Developing Countries
New Delhi -110 003.
The Action Programme for Economic Co-operation (APEC),
adopted at the New Delhi Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement
(NAM) held in March 1983, emphasised the importance of the
Research and Information System for the Non-Aligned and other
Developing Countries. It was also envisaged that such an institu-
tional set-up would facilitate fulfilling the objective contained in the
Resolution on Policy Guidelines for Reinforcing Collective Self-
Reliance between Developing Countries adopted by the Sixth Sum-
mit Conference at Havana (1979) , while keeping in mind the
relevant actions taken by the Group of 77 in the implementation of
the Caracas (1981) Programme of Action.
In pursuance of the above recommendation, an autonomous
institution entitled Research and Information System for the Non-
Aligned and Other Developing CountrL. RIS) was set up in May
1983 in New Delhi with the financial support of the Government of
India. Its aims-and objects, among others, include conducting re-
search on current international economic issues, promotion of eco-
nomic co-operation and collective self-reliance among non-aligned
and other developing countries; storage and dissemination of infor-
mation and data relating to diverse aspects such as trade, industri-
alisation, finance, energy, raw materials, technology transfer, etc., in
such form and manner as to strengthen the unified position and
approach of the non-aligned and other developing countries. RIS
would also foster and maintain a system of effective links among the
various research organisations, information centres, experts and policy-
makers of the developing countries.
