Housing Options

There is a wide variety of housing in Hong Kong including small, fully furnished serviced

apartments in the centre of the city; large apartments; and townhouses with sea and

harbour views and extending to single family dwellings with a yard and a garage. However,

given that only 8% a small percent of Hong Kong’s land mass is used for commercial and

residential use; it does call for a lot of vertical living arrangements and apartments feature

prominently in the housing sector.

Housing in Hong Kong remains very expensive regardless of the peaks and troughs

which the market does cyclically experience. Hong Kong often rates in the top five most

expensive cites in the world for its cost of housing.

Although the majority of expatriates live on Hong Kong Island, in recent years there has

been a trend to venture further afield. Some of the more popular areas you might

consider are West.

Kowloon due to the opening of a number of commercial buildings in the area; some

executives prefer to live close to Kowloon. Sai Kung and the New Territories offer

greater value for families looking for townhouses and more outdoor access. The

outlying islands such as Discovery Bay offer a variety of housing options in an

alternative family friendly setting.

Overall, rental prices will vary depending on the location, age/condition, the floor of the

apartment and whether there are facilities in the building e.g., gym, swimming pool. You

may need to prioritize your list of housing requirements, to help you select the right

property.
