Centred on the two streets, Las Mer-
cedes and Las Damas, together with the
Parque de Colón, numerous buildings built
during those years remain. The Cathedral
of Santa María de la Encarnación is a prime
example. The oldest cathedral in the Ameri-
cas, it was consecrated by Pope Julius II in
1504 before becoming the headquarters of
Sir Francis Drake and his henchmen during
their looting of the city a few decades later.
There is also the Alcazár de Colón (the
Viceregal Palace of Diego Columbus),
which survived the siege by the English pi-
rate and almost three centuries of neglect.
Its declaration as a national monument by
the government in 1870 and its restoration
during the second half of the last century
revived its fortunes, transforming it into one
of the city’s main tourist attractions.
The streets are still the most popular in
Santo Domingo among residents and tour-
ists alike. Visitors can stroll along El Conde
and around the surrounding area, immers-
ing themselves in the city’s history and
pausing to pick up a souvenir from one of
the small shops dotted around the district.
You can also walk along the promenade,
visit the nearby beach of Boca Chica to
soak up some sun and try the famous fried
fish.

Mercedes, Calle Las Damas und des Parque de

Die älteste Kathedrale des Kontinents. im Jahre
1504 von Papst Julius II geweiht, wurde sie
einige Jahrzehnte später zum Hauptquartier von
Sir Francis Drake und seinen Anhängern, als
diese die Stadt plünderten.
Auch der Vizekönigliche Palast von Diego
Kolumbus, bekannt als Alcázar de Colón, über-
stand die Belagerung des englischen Piraten
unversehrt, ebenso wie die fast drei Jahrhun-
derte seiner Verwahrlosung. Im Jahre 1870
wurde er von der Regierung zum Nationaldenk-
mal erklärt und Mitte des vergangenen Jahr-
hunderts restauriert. Dadurch lebte das Alcázar
wieder auf und wurde zu einer der wichtigsten
Touristenattraktionen der Stadt.
Auch heute noch sind diese Straßen die von
Einwohnern und Touristen am häufigsten
frequentierten Santo Domingos. Durch die Calle
El Conde und die umliegenden Straßen zu
spazieren, um etwas mehr über die Geschichte
der Stadt zu erfahren und nebenher in einem
der kleinen Geschäfte, die es hier überall gibt,
ein Souvenir zu kaufen, ist ein in jeder Hinsicht
interessanter Ausflug. Er kann zudem durch
einen Spaziergang am Malecón ergänzt werden
oder durch einen Besuch des nahe gelegenen
Strandes Boca Chica, wo man die Sonne ge-
nießen und nebenher den berühmten gegrillten
Fisch verkosten kann.

En las inmediaciones de las calles Las
Mercedes, Las damas o el Parque de Colón se
mantienen en pie numerosos edificios que se
erigieron durante aquellos años. La Catedral
de Santa María de la Encarnación es uno de
ellos. La más antigua del continente, consagra-
da en 1504 por el papa Julio II, se convirtió al-
gunas décadas después en el cuartel general
de sir Francis Drake y sus secuaces durante el
saqueo que perpetraron en la ciudad.
También el Palacio Virreinal de Don Diego
Colón, o Alcázar de Colón, como popularmen-
te se le conoce, logró sobrevivir al asedio del
pirata inglés así como a los años de aban-
dono que sufrió durante casi tres siglos. La
declaración de Monumento Nacional por parte
del gobierno en 1870 y la restauración a la que
fue sometido a mediados del pasado siglo
lograron resucitar al alcázar y convertirlo en
una de las principales atracciones turísticas de
la ciudad.
Hoy aquellas calles siguen siendo las más
transitadas de Santo Domingo por quienes allí
residen, pero también por los turistas. Caminar
por la de El Conde y sus alrededores para
conocer un poco más sobre la historia de la
ciudad y, de paso, hacerse con un souvenir en
alguna de las pequeñas tiendas que salpican
la zona, se convierte en un plan de lo más
apetecible. Además, puede completarse con
un paseo por el Malecón o una visita a la
playa más cercana, la de Boca Chica, donde
disfrutar del sol y, de paso, degustar su famoso
pescado frito.
