6.6 Poland

The disruption scenarios investigated in BEMIP GRIP do not directly influence the

functioning of the gas network in Poland. The modelling results show that Poland

has, in all assessed cases, a high degree of remaining flexibility. This potential could

be shared with adjacent systems in the Baltic Sea region once relevant projects are

commissioned. This relates in particular to the GIPL project that will link the Baltic

States and Finland with the main EU gas grid and additionally Baltic Pipe that will

integrate the countries in the West Baltic region.

The cross-border interconnection between Poland and Lithuania could be used to

mitigate the negative effects of gas supply disruptions to the East Baltic region by

transporting gas from alternative sources and routes. In this case, Norwegian

supplies via the NO–DK–PL project could be a viable option. The same can also

apply to LNG from the terminal in Świnoujście. Furthermore, the Baltic Pipe project

will provide a new route to supply Denmark and Sweden with LNG. Therefore, it may

well help both countries to increase the limited remaining flexibility that is apparent

in these assessments.
