board of education requires a hearing (within 15 to 30 days prior to

employment) with public notice of the hearing published at least 60 days

RELIGIOUS

INSTRUCTION,

RELEASED TIME FOR

A school district board of education is permitted, but not required, to

adopt a policy authorizing students to attend released time courses

in religious instruction conducted off school property during regular

school hours. Students may not be excused from any course

required to meet the core course credits needed for graduation.

The district policy may provide for the granting of up to two units of

high school credit for the released time religious instruction, subject

to the district board's evaluation of the courses based on secular

criteria. However, the units of credit must be elective and not replace

any of the core course requirements for graduation.

School districts, their board members, and employees are granted

immunity from a civil action for damages for injury allegedly arising

during a student's transportation to or from a place of instruction

when private transportation is used under a released time policy.
