EPINEPHRINE

AUTOINJECTORS,

SCHOOL USE OF

A board of education may procure epinephrine autoinjectors for use in

emergency situation, and it is recommended that each school have at

least two such autoinjectors if the board elects this option. The board

must further require the superintendent to adopt a policy governing the

use of the autoinjectors but only after consulting with a licensed health

professional authorized to prescribe drugs.

The policy must:

1)Include a prescriber-issued protocol specifying definitive orders

for the autoinjectors and the dosages of epinephrine to be

administered through them;

2)Identify the locations in each school where the autoinjectors are

stored and the conditions under which they must be stored,

replaced, and disposed;

3)Specify the individuals authorized to provide a dosage of

epinephrine in an emergency situation;

4)Specify the training that individuals authorized to administer the

dosage must complete;

5)Identify the emergency situations in which an approved individual

may access and use the autoinjector;

6)Specify that assistance from an emergency medical provider

must be requested immediately after the autoinjector is used;

and

7)Specify any individuals (in addition to students, staff, contractors,

school visitors) to whom a dosage can be administered in an

emergency situation.

The board, school district, school, and staff will not be liable in any civil

action for damages unless the act or omission constitutes willful or

wanton misconduct.
