LEARGAS

Leargas is a review of public and current

affairs published by the Institute of Public

Administration whose

address

is

57/61,

Lansdowne Road, Dublin 4. Publication is

bi-monthly but it is hoped eventually to

make it a monthly publication.

The magazine covers a wide range of

topics of public and current interest—econ

omics, politics,

education,

administration,

local government, health,

law,

etc. The

magazine should be of interest to professional

and business people who are interested in an

intelligent and informed comment on public

affairs. Solicitors would be particularly in

terested in the review of Professor R. J.

O'Hanlon, S.C., on Professor Beth's

'The

Development of Judicial Review in Ireland,

1937-1966', which appeared in the November

1967 issue.

The

Institute of Public Administration

provide six issues post free for the sum of

14/-.

MEDICO-LEGAL SOCIETY

The meeting of the above Society will be

held on Thursday, February 29th. The meet

ing will

take

the form of a

lecture on

"Medico-Legal aspects of Coronary Heart

Disease". The

speaker will be Risteard

Mulcahy, M.D., M.R.C.P., Director, Cardiac

Department, St. Vincent's Hospital.

PROFESSIONAL STATIONERY

It has come to the attention of the Society

that a number of solicitors are using sta

tionery which contains the name of persons

who are no longer solicitors or who do not

hold practising certificates. The stationery

used by a solicitor should contain only the

names

of

solicitors who hold practising

certificates for the current year.

THE

IRISH ASSOCIATION FOR DOCU

MENTATION AND INFORMATION

SERVICES (IADIS)

The Irish Association for Documentation

(IAD) was established in 1947 to promote in

Ireland

the

recording,

organisation

and

dissemination of specialised knowledge. Most

of the chief libraries and scientific institu

tions became members, and committees were

set up to deal with a number of projects,

some of which were brought to a conclusion,

while others are still in progress. For example

the Association produced the Union List of

Current Periodicals and Serials in Dublin

Libraries, 1954, with new editions in 1959

and 1965 (being continued); a List of Irish

Publications received annually by the Na

tional Library under the Irish Copyright Act

(published annually

in An Leabharlann).

From

the material supplied by

the

co

operating institutions there was eventually

published Manuscript Sources for the History

of Irish Civilisation. Edited by R. J. Hayes,

Vols. I-XI. Boston, G. K. Hall & Co., 1965.

The Association also

issued a

leaflet on

Documentary Reproduction, and organised

the Irish contribution to the International

Survey of Musical Sources (ISMS).

In Summer, 1967, following meetings with

representatives of Information Officers and

Librarians, the title of the Association was

altered to The Irish Association for Documen

tation and Information Services

(IADIS),

and at a subsequent meeting of the Council

the following Information Officers were co-

opted: Mr. T. Cox (Institute of Irish Manage

ment), Mr. G. Sweeney (Institute for Indus

trial Research and Standards), and Mr. H.

Walsh

(Irish National Productivity Com

mittee). The other members of the Council

are Professor F. E. Hackett, Chairman; Mr.

P. Henchy

(National Library), Honorary

Secretary; Miss E. Power (U.C.D.), Honorary

Treasurer; Miss K. Bonfield (R.I.A.), Miss M.

O'Byrne (City of Dublin Public Libraries),

Mr. H. Heaney (Magee University), Dr. D.

Roberts

(T.C.D.), Mr. D. Clarke

(R.D.S.)

and Mr. P. Havard-Williams (Queen's Univer

sity, Belfast).

A programme of activities for the im

mediate future was adopted, and working

panels were appointed to deal with:

(a)

Education and Training;

(b) Union List of Current Periodicals

and Serials;

(c) Directory of Special Libraries.
