Anyone whose project involves the joining

of metal knows that welding is crucial

to a smooth manufacturing process.

More than that, the professionals whose

products and services are reviewed here

think of the welded joint as the essential

link in a structure. Their welding culture

of soundness and dependability has been

evolving ever since it was discovered that

two pieces of metal can be made – in the

right hands, and with the right technique –

into a third thing of greater utility

and value.

But every point of that development

is only a way-station. As materials are

formulated for greater strength, corrosion

resistance, and other performance

factors, welding can only become more

challenging. Ever-closer monitoring of

the auxiliaries of the welding operation

– the base metal, filler metals, gases

– will be required. Welding will have

to be performed under water and in

other liquids, with no adverse effect

on the weldment. Pre- and post-weld

heat treatment and other techniques

will enhance weldability; but for broad

acceptance their costs must be brought

well down.

Welding is a mature process. But given

the greater demands made of a welded

joint all the time, very possibly the glory

days of welding lie ahead of it.
