Deputy Chief Constable
Congratulates
IPA Winner
Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)
Deputy Chief Constable, and IPA member,
Judith Gillespie met with Catherine Milliken to
congratulate her after she represented Section
UK at the National Police Day in Poland.
Every police officer in the UK who is an
IPA member was invited to apply to attend
this prestigious event as the Section UK
representative. Catherine and one other officer
from England were the successful candidates
in 2013.
Catherine, a neighbourhood officer in Londonderry
spent two weeks in Poland as a VIP guest of the
Polish police, experiencing such diverse activities
as public order training, firing a Kalashnikov,
visiting the Crime Laboratory, regular city patrolling
and river police patrolling amongst many others. All
this then culminated in the formal celebrations of
National Police Day.
Catherine said,
“The two weeks were packed full
and I learned a huge amount and saw so many
things and met so many people. Every day I met
incredible people who overwhelmed me with their
kindness and generosity and who truly made
me feel part of their families. Working and being
hosted by the Polish police was so interesting – I
have learned a huge amount about their working
practices and culture. It was a magnificent
experience and I am really grateful to the IPA for
giving me this opportunity.
DCC Gillespie remarked,
“Catherine’s achievement
in this endeavour is commendable and she has
brought great credit to the Service and to the UK
Section of the IPA. I have said in the past that the
IPA offers outstanding professional development,
social, travel and networking opportunities to us all
and Catherine’s experience is an excellent example
of this.”
Catherine’s adventures have sparked a renewed
wave of interest in the IPA amongst her peers
and colleagues as other officers begin to see the
benefits of IPA membership.
Brian Kennedy, the IPA Publicity Officer for 2
Region said, “
I am in no doubt that Catherine’s
experiences have contributed hugely to an increase
in new members. Although she has only been in
the IPA for a year, Catherine has become one of our
most effective ambassadors and has joined our
team of District Champions”

Our
Survey
Says
In a questionnaire issued to recently enrolled
members, we were told:
My joining date of enrolment to my original
(overseas) Section was not transferred to my
UK joining date.
Secretary General Dave Taylor explains the
membership card issued by Section UK shows
the date of joining Section UK. The costs
involved in programming the membership
database are prohibitive so on this occasion
the Section is unable to accommodate the
small number of members affected by this
matter.
The website does not always allow me to
log in even though I know the username and
password are correct.
The possible reasons this problem might occur
are:
Including the initials ‘UK’ as the member
ID / Username. Members should use the digits
from the IPA membership number only.

Contact
in
Italy
Whilst on a Mediterranean cruise John Reid,
from Dyfed Powys branch, and his wife Ena,
disembarked in Venice for two nights.
John wanted to meet some Italian police officers
so, using IPA contacts, made arrangements for
a meeting with Gerardo Savo, Commissioner of
Police, San Marco Square Office. He introduced
them to IPA members and serving officers
Vesentini Alberto and Spiga Giovanni Luigi.
