Döndü working with a Notts officer
ILDEP
in the Midlands
In September 2013, Chief Inspector
Döndü Yazgan, from Section Germany,
arrived in England to work with police in
Nottinghamshire and Birmingham on a two
week internship.
Döndü works within the Hessian Constabulary
in Wiesbaden. Her work focuses on addressing
crime prevention which is carried out with a
multi-culturally oriented perspective. The goal is
to encourage dialogue between the police and
all ethnic minorities.
The programme, pieced together by Gurmit
Kaur of Nottinghamshire branch, allowed
Döndü to get a hands on experience of the
partnership that has been established between
Nottingham’s police force and Nottingham City
Council to achieve similar goals to Döndü’s own
constabulary.
During her stay, Döndü was kept very busy. Her
skills were put into practice shortly after her
arrival as she helped translate for a German
member of the public at Central station’s front
desk. She was then whisked away to work with
the Radford Road Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Döndü also spent time with members from
Birmingham branch at a variety of West
Midlands police departments. This was co-
ordinated by branch member Simon Barrett and
branch Chair Andy Gregory.
She visited a cannabis factory after a warrant
was executed by IPA member Tom Chisholm and
a team of officers in Birmingham. An arrest was
made and 700 plants were seized.
Andy said,
“Dondu throughly enjoyed her two-
week stay in the UK and gained lots of ideas to
take back to use at home. Exchange visits and
fact-finding trips through the IPA are a great
way of developing links and spreading good
practice.”
Döndü’s visit coincided with the
Nottinghamshire branch 55th anniversary
celebrations. Döndü had the opportunity to
engage with the Mayor of Nottingham and
Lady Mayoress, the Police Crime
Commissioner, Mr Paddy Tipping,
and the Chief Constable Chris Eyre.
On speaking of her stay and what
she had learnt, Döndü said,
“I
spent a fascinating and productive
two weeks with Nottinghamshire
and Birmingham police. I was
able to exchange and share vital
information and experiences with
my new colleagues, who all really
went out of their way to offer me
an exceptional and invigorating
programme. Thus, not only was
I able to take quite a few new ideas home, I
also established new contacts and found new
friends, which means a lot to me – not only
professionally, but also personally.
Finally, a huge thank you to you all in
Nottingham and Birmingham for your fantastic
support and hospitality - particularly to Gurmit
Kaur. I truly felt I was part of the team! Needless
to say – and going with the German saying “auf
Wiedersehen” - I very much hope we will have
the opportunity to meet again soon!”

All Aboard!
Devon branch members didn’t let
rain put a damper on their latest
adventure!
A group of a dozen of them
met at Colyton to take a ride on the
Seaton Tram.
A historic tram that runs over the track
of the old Seaton railway that took
London visitors from the main Waterloo
line to the seaside. This section of
track runs for three miles through the
beautiful scenery of the Axe valley. The
area is a birdwatchers’ delight. The tram
terminates at the seaside town of Seaton
- with its harbour, pebbly shoreline and
attractive beach huts.
Fourteen half scale replica classic trams,
from all over the world, form the fleet
which is beautifully maintained. It’s well
worth the visit.
After a brief visit to the beach and a longer
visit to the pub we returned on a single
decker. The rain just added to the fun of the
whole day. Come and try it.
