Evaporation cannon handles mine wastewater

After identifying the need for an environ-

mentally-safe evaporation system to reduce

excess wastewater at mines, I-CAT Water

Solutions developed the I-VAP 500 evapo-

ration cannon, which is capable of handling

500 m

3

per 12-hour day. The evaporation

rate is 60 % to 65 %, depending on ambi-

ent weather conditions, I-CAT Technical

Manager Morne Van Wyk explains.

This latest wastewater treatment and

management system from I-CAT Water

Solutions ensures that wastewater from

mine sites does not enter the general envi-

ronment and thereby contaminate water

further downstream. A particular bene-

fit of the I-VAP 500 is its low energy-use

to evaporation ratio, Van Wyk notes.

The I-VAP 500 can cover 32 000 m

2

,

with an automatic oscillation option of

up to 359 deg. An integrated turntable

bearing allows the operator to over-

ride the oscillator manually in order

to reposition the fan barrel quickly. In

addition, the cannon has an adjustable

angle of throw, with a height adjust-

ment of 7 to 45 deg.

It produces a large spray pattern that

allows for a longer float time, thereby

increasing the evaporation rate. The can-

non works by atomising the water through

38 nozzles, which are available in PVC,

stainless steel, brass or nylon, depending

on the application.

The unit discharges 21,3 litres a minute

through each nozzle, with the 55 kW pump

delivering a maximum pressure of 10 bar.

The droplet size is 150 µ to 180 µ, with a

throw distance of 80 m to 110 m.

The I-VAP 500 features an integrated

fan and nozzle ring design, together with a

high-pressure hose and a 40 mm cam-and-

groove quick disconnect female coupling. It

boasts a premium efficiency 0,10 kW oscil-

lator motor, and is supplied with a 50 mm

electrical cord of up to 30 m, with other

options being available.

Continued economic pressure always

produces a conundrum when it comes to

purchasing decisions, especially with an

increased focus on reducing costs. Andrew

Mentis, however, raises the concern that

there may be a very real danger that infe-

rior quality products will be used, and this

will have a detrimental effect on safety.

Elaine van Rooyen, Marketing Manager

at Andrew Mentis, explains that this is

especially true for its flagship product.

“It is critical that when purchasing

flooring grating that a quality product

with structural integrity is procured as this

material is most often used as access walk-

ways and platforms and therefore needs to

be able to hold the required personnel and

equipment without any cause for concern

over their safety,” she says.

Mentis floor grating is engineered to

take specific loading which ensures opti-

mum safety of the people walking on or

working in those areas. Van Rooyen raises

the issue that while cheaper products may

well look identical, and to the untrained

eye will not have any apparent physical

difference, they may not be capable of car-

rying the requisite load.

“Often it is only after the floor grating

has been installed and in use for some time

that the danger of its reduced load-bearing

capacity will become apparent. And this is

No room for compromise on quality

why we believe there is an urgent need to

educate the market about this problem,”

van Rooyen says.

One of the major differentiators that

Andrew Mentis flooring products have is

that they are subjected to an extensive

quality manufacturing process. “We do

not compromise on quality, which means

that under no circumstances are we pre-

pared to cut corners. Apart from the strict

controls under which our products are

manufactured, we do not use commercial

quality mild steel. We have standardised on

SAE 1008 which ensures consistency and

also prevents damage to our machines.”

Andrew Mentis was established more

than 65 years ago and has numerous ref-

erence bases in a number of industries

in South Africa. Operating from large

premises in Elandsfontein, the company

manufactures floor grating, expanded

metal and hand-railing systems in mild

steel and stainless steel, and guard-railing.
