his is an area in which the stars grab the headlines, and titanium fasteners are natural
headline-grabbers. With aerospace poised to enter a new growth cycle, this is as it should be. But
these guarantors of safety aloft come out of a tradition that is no less concerned for the soundness of
the nut/washer assemblies in the wheels of a farm wagon.
The website of a prominent fastener manufacturer declares that no material is too exotic for its experts.
Tellingly, the same manufacturer had first noted that all of its studs and nuts are stamped with a code
for heat-resistance traceability. That sensibility pervades the industry. From the nuts and bolts to the
stars, the makers of fasteners and springs are unapologetic perfectionists.
