The attention of members is drawn to the view

o f the Bar Council that it is undesirable for

counsel to consult with or accept instructions

from a client or his representatives in contentious

matters unless the solicitor instructing him is

present or has requested him to do so.

NOTICES OF CHARITABLE

BEQUESTS.

Commissioners o f Charitable Donations and

Bequests have reviewed their requirements as to

the statutory notices under Section 19 o f the Charit­

able Donations and Bequests (Ireland) Act, 1867.

The requirements may now be summarised as

follows :—

(1) In any case where the aggregate value o f the

charitable devises and bequests does not exceed

£1,000, exemption from publication will be

granted, provided receipts are furnished for

inspection. Where a residue is given for

charitable purposes, or where an abatement

in the amount of the charitable legacies occurs,

an Executor’s Account should also be fur­

nished ;

(2) In any case where the value of the charitable

devises and bequests exceed £1,000, but does

not exceed £5,000, the Statutory Notice should

be published once in the

Iris Oifigiuil

and once

in the appropriate newspaper ;

(3) Where the value of the charitable devises and

bequests exceeds £5,000, but does not exceed

£10,000, the Statutory Notice should be

published once in the

Iris Oifigiuil

and in two

successive issues o f the appropriate newspaper ;

(4) Where the charitable devises and bequests

exceed £10,000 in value, full publication should

be made, namely, once in the

Iris Oifigiuil

and in three successive issues o f the appro­

priate newspaper.

DUBLIN SOLICITORS’ BAR

ASSOCIATION.

Annual Dinner o f the Dublin Solicitors’ Bar

Association was held in the Hibernian Hotel, Dublin,

on Saturday the 12th December, 195 3. The members

present and their guests numbered over 200. Among

the guests were the President o f the High Court,

Mr. Justice Davitt, the Master o f the High Court,

the President of the Incorporated Law Society, the

President of the Southern Law Association, several

o f the Justices o f the Dublin Metropolitan District

Courts.

The Toast of Ireland was given by the President

o f the Association, Mr. Timothy K irw an ; that of

the Guests was proposed by Mr. James J . O’Connor,

and replied to by the President o f the Incorporated

Law Society and District Justice Henry A. McCarthy

whilst the Toast o f the Association was proposed

by Sir John Esmonde, S.C., and responded to by

Mr. Kirwan. A musical programme followed and

the function was considered highly enjoyable.

Arrangements have been made to hold 3 meetings

at which lectures on matters o f interest to the

profession will be delivered and these functions will

be held in the Dolphin Hotel on January 21st,

February 18th and March 25th, 1954.

Annual subscriptions for membership of the

Association for the current year are now due. The

Annual Subscription is 15/- and is payable to the

Hon. Treasurer, Mr. Desmond A. O’Connor, 140

St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin.

THE WATERFORD LAW SOCIETY.

Annual General Meeting of the Waterford Law

Society was held on the 15 th inst. 14 members

attended. Mr. Fergus Power, solicitor, was elected

President for the coming year, with the following

Committee : Messrs. Kevin O’Shaughnessy, George

A . Nolan, P. J. O’Connor, Maurice Keller, and

M. J. Lardner, Hon. Secretary. Matters o f interest

to the profession were discussed and dealt with.

THE ENTERPRISE TROPHY.

have been requested to publish the inscription

on the Enterprise Golf Trophy, which was in­

accurately given in the Society’s Gazette for Novem­

ber. An attested copy o f the inscription received

from the Southern Law Association reads as follows :

A Chose in Action created by the Southern

Law Association for Annual proceedings in the

Michaelmas Sittings between legal golfers within

the several jurisdictions o f Munster, Ulster,

Leinster and Connaught.
