twelve months. The effect o f these repeals is that,

in any cause of action accruing after the ist July,

J 954> if any proceedings are henceforth instituted

against a local authority or statutory body, these

proceedings can be taken within the same period

of time, as if the defendant were an ordinary litigant.

Thus the cause o f action, in the cases o f breach of

contract and o f most torts would be six years,

but unlike the corresponding English provisions,

the period o f one year in which dependants may sue

under Lord Campbell’s Act, 1846 has not been

altered, nor have there been any new provisions

made as regards suing Departments of State. Again,

litigants will now have twelve years to sue a public

authority or statutory board in the case of recovery

of land.

Mr. McConnell served his apprenticeship with

the late Mr. Samuel F. McConnell, Solicitor, Lisburn,

and practised at 7 Upper Queen Street, Belfast.

Mr. McCarthy served his apprenticeship with Mr.

Joseph H. Dixon, Solicitor, 16 Parnell Square,

Dublin, was admitted in Hilary Sittings 1939, and

practised at 59/61 Dame Street, up to his appoint­

ment last year as Resident Magistrate o f the British

Colonial Service in Tanganyika.
