!ALBUM REVIEWS!

By Taylor Crooks

Harry Styles - Harry Styles You all definitely should have expected that this album would be featured. It’s absolutely no secret that I’m obsessed with this album (the limited edition white vinyl is so beautiful, trust)

and I have so many reasons as to why. The whole album serves a kind of 70’s Brit rock that popular music has been missing since Bowie was on top of the charts, and I am one of many that are welcoming it back with open arms. Despite the well established vibe, killer vocals and outstanding lyrics, it’s really obvious that this is Harry’s first album. Each song is so wildly different that it’s hard to outline any common theme between them all, but thankfully every song is a bop on its own, so it’s pretty easy to justify any missteps as “debut album blunders”. In saying that, I hope and pray that Harry’s next solo album not only exists, but is a bit more polished. He has proven to the world that he is capable of great things, so his next objective is to take it

one step further. Top Track: Kiwi

DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar (explicit) So, we already know that Kendrick Lamar is an all round cool guy, but this album honestly blows it out of the water. This is definitely an album that I could listen to on repeat for a long time, because it keeps you interested the whole way through. Each track is vastly different to

the rest, while still maintaining a cohesion to the overall theme of the album as a whole. I find that it can be really easy, especially in the rap world, for artists to rely on a certain formula for success, but Kendrick Lamar has had no trouble breaking away from the similar sound that has plagued the “gatho scene” for so long. The attention to detail is evident, so there was no point in which I questioned why he had used a certain sample, or why he delivered a certain lyric. This album gets you feeling like a badass in LOYALTY . to feeling kind of soft and cute in LOVE. , to feeling empathetically terrified in FEAR. . The album is overall really well produced and put together, and should definitely be given a chance.

Top Track: DNA.

hopeless fountain kingdom – Halsey

Okay so, like, what is this? Like, genuinely?? If we can just start by acknowledging and then putting aside the overused Romeo and Juliet trope that serves as the entire foundation of the album’s concept, we get...everything Halsey has already done, but with a beat this time?? The album is pretty forgettable except for a few tracks here and there, and it’s disappointing because I honestly expected so much more from Halsey. She has proven her ability to deliver some really great and individual songs like Control and Hurricane from her past album, but I just feel like this falls short. I think that the main downfall of this album is how inauthentic it sounds. It seems as though Halsey is trying to become this caricature of herself, and it feels really

forced. I really hope she begins to re-embrace the honesty we saw in the storytelling of her last album, because I can see her fanbase becoming really exhausted in this portrayal of Uber- Bad-Gal-Halsey. Top Track: Walls Could Talk

House Captain Interviews

Charlotte Roche & Ainsley Mccarthy

We all wonder what House Captains really do; besides aim to coerce us into the pool at Swimming Carnival, however ineffective that has proven to be. Is there a shimmering light of humour behind those, for lack of a better word, stern assembly speeches and carnival pep talks, in the midst? Let’s find out, we took to interviewing five of our House Captains, Maro, Ali, Olivier, Lewis and Crystal, where we came to the conclusion that these were the answers that best encapsulated the life of a House Captain, so to speak. 1. If you had to switch captaincy positions with someone, who would it be?  Andrews House Captain, just to see what constant disappointment feels like. 2. What’s your most useless hidden talent?  Screaming in Skype calls 3. Describe the colour red to a blind person?  Hot, fiery, in your face- reddish 4. Solve the riddle: “You have to cut a cake into 8 equal pieces, but you can only make 3 cuts with a knife- how do you do it?” and no you can’t just make one long cut without taking the knife out  Verbally roast the cake until it physically shatters 5. if you had to choose one song that plays every time you walk into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Bad and Boujee- Can’t Touch This Remix  Pink Panther Theme Song 6. What kitchen utensil would you be and why?  A wooden spoon because I love to stir beef up  A knife so I can dice it up 7. Pick two celebrities to be your parents (dead or alive)?  Signor and Madonna  Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively 8. What’s your most embarrassing House Captain moment?  Losing to Matt Smith 9. If you had to come up with a new motto for your House, what would it be?  Showtime Baby (Andrews)  Unlucky, better next time (Laver)

Still think you don’t know the House Captains well enough?

AFTERSHOCK by Vivi Baker

Was there a specific moment in time

where our worship shifted and became

worthless?

Where we started losing ourselves in infrared rays and stopped taking

an interest in the things actually stay?

How on earth did we not see these seismic shifts and seize them, how can it be - when now we’re all living in a world of blind transparency yet our eyes have become opaque; they say the eyes are the windows to the soul - maybe even souls have an expiry date. Because all we ever do is buy, buy, buy. Throw our paychecks at the big men and hope in vain that they will try to fix this mess that we created cash in and get cremated I sure hope you got funeral insurance cause you don’t wanna be left waiting In the line to the morgue . And don’t you dare think about escaping cause we all know how much this nation hates the “queue-jumpers”. Maybe it was then that our worship became senseless in the moments between the explosion and facing the consequences. Maybe it was during the aftershock that they tattooed these barcodes on our wrists When we were all still too weak to clench our hands into fists , when we all learned we were property in this game of Monopoly yet no-one had even told us how to play by the rules properly. But we were all too shellshocked to take part in the trade and they taught us that nobody likes damaged goods anyway. And we made the mistake of believing them. That was the moment our worship became mislead and our trains of thought became warped, like tangled pieces of thread. As we balanced precariously on the edge of insanity and at the bottom of our list of priorities was humanity. All our empathy became lost in translation as hatred is now our preferred form of communication. You know that when a bomb goes off there’s minutes of lingering aftershock .

We’ve stopped standing hand in hand with those who wear their heart on their sleeve and have started falling at the feet of those wearing thousand-dollar cufflinks.

You see our worship has warped itself into falsehoods and lies and over time we’ve learnt to become desensitised

So we stay locked in the aftershock constantly, indefinitely Wishing for something more, but never saying anything

Because we are always told to never speak up or make a fuss. Why bother, when our barcodes do the talking for us?

Article by Manasi Guduri

When you want 35% badassery, 35% romance and 40% fantasy:

Eighteen year old Myla Lewis is not your every day quasi- demon, half-demon and half-human, girl. For the past five years, Myla has lived for the days she gets to fight in Purgatory’s arena. When souls want a trial by combat for their right to enter heaven or hell, they go up against her, and she hasn’t lost a battle yet. But as she starts her senior year at Purgatory High, the arena fights aren’t enough to keep her spirits up anymore. When the demons start to act weird, even for demons, and the King of the Demons, Armageddon, shows up at Myla’s school, she knows that things are changing and it’s not looking good for the quasi- demons. Myla starts to question everything, and doesn’t like the answers she finds. What happened seventeen years ago that turned the quasi-demons into slave labor? Why was her mom always so sad? And why won’t anyone tell her who her father is? Things heat up when Myla meets Lincoln, the High Prince of the Thrax, a half-human and half-angel demon hunter. But what’s a quasi-demon girl to do when she falls for a demon hunter? It’s a good thing that Myla’s not afraid of breaking a few rules. With a love worth fighting for, Myla’s going to shake up Purgatory. (Trust me- not as complicated as it all sounds) "Imprisoned, starved and left with no memories, Thalia awakens to find at the mercy of an evil cult known as the Septori. Their leader has chosen Thalia as the test subject for a torture device on untold power, designed to change and twist her into something that is neither human nor Denai. Escaping, Thalia finds an unwilling warrior to protect her and an unlikely Denai to befriend her. After finding a home at the Citadel as a servant, Thalia's worst nightmare comes to life and she begins to show signs of power. Scared and unable to control her gifts, she tries to hide her past to fit in among the Denai. But the Septori want their latest test subject back and will stop at nothing to retrieve her; dead or alive."

When you want 35% mystery, 15% romance, 20% action and 30% magic:

When you’re feeling 25% quick wit, 45% of romance and 15% of sap and another 15% appreciation of life:

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla. But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Already read the fault in our stars? Craving more of that angsty, cancer-filled, tear-jerker?

Mia's not your typical hospital patient. Her next door neighbor Zac can hear her fighting with her mom and the nurses through their shared wall and he wishes she'd get over herself. But soon they are trading messages that evolve into a bond neither sees coming. Apart from illness, they have little in common: she's a gorgeous girl with an entourage of perfect friends and he's a soccer-playing farm boy. In the real world, these two seventeen year-olds would have little to say to each other, but in the hospital the usual rules no longer apply. By the time Zac is discharged, Mia is gone too, and he wonders about her. Is she okay? Is she better? He can't find out. She's left Facebook and won't answer his texts. Until the night he hears a tap at his window. Told in alternating perspectives, Zac and Mia tracks the relationship of two ordinary teenagers in exceptional circumstances. They're both in remission, but cancer has changed everything, and normal isn't normal anymore. This is a funny and tender novel about hope, love, and courage.

DIYs Chapter 2 – Ripped jeans

Hey everyone! I hope you are all excited for the holidays as much as I am. Today, we will be looking at making your plain jeans into ripped jeans, this can be a very basic form of thrifting if you think about it. This DIY contains the use of sharp objects. You have been warned. Secondly, you need to gather supplies to distress and rip the jeans. For

Firstly, grab your pair of denim (or other) jeans, I got mine from a thrift shop. The knees already look a little worn which saves time on sanding it. The parts that we will be ripping are the knees and a small patch on the left thigh.

distressing I used a piece of rough sandpaper (but you can also use a pumice stone). For ripping, I used a Stanley knife, but be careful, cardboard block which was placed inside the leg of the pants at the knee region, you don’t want to rip the other side of the jeans. you don’t want to cut yourself. I used a small

After you have finished cutting the areas where you want the rip, use the sandpaper and rub horizontally, make sure to hold down one side to it does not slide everywhere. Your jeans should somewhat look like this depending on where and how you are ripping. But this is not enough, it looks like we have cut am unworn pair of jeans (which we have shhh) but it is not the effect we want so we continue to distress with the sand paper horizontally until all the light blue or white strings are visible.

Thirdly, you can finally start distressing. I used the pumice stone first so distress then the sandpaper. You basically just get your distressing material and rub the region until the material becomes thin. At this point, there will be a lot of loose fluff so be sure to have a vacuum handy. After distressing, I used my Stanley knife cut into the pants where I want the tears to be.

Because there were still pieces of denim attached, you can use tweezers to remove them but be careful because you do not want to rip the strings (unless you want to)

Finally, You can keep distressing with sandpaper until it looks about right and VIOLA! Congratulations, you have a pair of ripped jeans yay! 

You MEME so much to us so we’re returning the favour by providing you with these glorious pictures ;)
