ABOUT US

Murphy Plant is committed to self-improvement and best practice. We hold various industry-standard accreditations and memberships, including gold status from the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) run by Transport for London.

Van Excellence is an industry-led initiative that aims to: ■ enhance standards of van operator compliance ■ celebrate operators who demonstrate excellence ■ represent the interests of the van industry ■ increase safety for your drivers and other road users ■ obtain recognition from the industry, customers and the public for the highest operating standards ■ gain peace of mind in the legal compliance of your van fleet. The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme that promotes best practice for commercial vehicle operators. With over 4,250 members, FORS is gaining recognition as the transport industry’s go-to accreditation scheme. FORS encompasses all aspects of safety, efficiency, and environmental protection by encouraging and training fleet operators to measure, monitor and improve performance. FORS provides accreditation pathways for operators of any type, and for those organisations that award contracts and specify transport. requirements. V CLOCS brings the construction industry together to revolutionise the management of work related road risk (WRRR) and ensure a road safety culture is embedded across the industry. By working together we can help protect pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users who share the roads with construction vehicles. The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) is the leading trade association for this sector in the UK and CPA members supply 85% of hired plant to the construction industry. Established for 75 years, the CPA has over 1,600 members and is governed by a council of members, who represent plant-hire companies of all types and sizes throughout the country.

NEVER HARM VALUE

Murphy is a leading multi-disciplined engineering and construction company which delivers safe, innovative and sustainable solutions to the most complex infrastructure problems. Murphy’s vision is to create a sustainable future through delivery of world-class infrastructure. Never harming people, the environment or communities is a core value to Murphy. The company believes that regardless of the quality of safety systems, it is the strength of the safety

culture within an organisation that determines how closely it can achieve this. And even then, the real key is sustaining it. Murphy recognises that excellence is achieved by making safety its core value for each employee. Acknowledging that one-hit safety training does not achieve sustainability, Murphy has a Culture Development Programme to deliver it’s never harm goal.

7

OUR NEVER HARM VALUE

COMPLIANCE AND INNOVATION

New integrated eco-specification ■ Double glazed windows that improve U-Values through better insulation ■ Blinds to reduce sun glare ■ Passive infra-red (PIR) sensors to operate lighting ■ Thermostat / timer controlled heating system ■ Air conditioning to allow doors and windows to be closed and create a comfortable working environment ■ Heavy duty door closers to retain heat ■ Dual flush cisterns and non-concussive push taps to reduce water consumption ■ Sustainably sourced timber ■ Insulated window shutters and external doors

Innovation With a strong culture of innovation, Murphy encourages its employees to think freely and creatively to provide safe and sustainable solutions to complex infrastructure problems. We recognise innovation is the key to delivering safer, smarter and greener solutions for clients. We offer a variety of different upgrades to our anti-vandal units which provide both economic and environmental benefits: ■ Insulated floors (PIY / foam / PIY) (underdrawn) – help regulate temperature by minimising heat loss and insulating against the cold ■ UPVC windows / doors (double glazed) – insulated windows and doors add environmental and cost benefits by reducing heat loss ■ Door closers – closed doors reduce heat loss and save energy

11

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Innovation is integral to our success and we look to make improvements in all aspects of our work.

■ Waterless urinals – reduce water use and improve sustainability ■ Non concussive taps – taps cannot be accidentally left on, saving water ■ PIR controls – lights come on automatically when someone is in the room, turning off once they leave. This saves electricity and reduces energy costs ■ LED lights – LED lights are highly efficient and have an outstanding operational lifespan ■ Timed heating systems – energy is saved by only providing heat when it is required. ■ AC inverters – AC inverters store energy, reducing live energy requirements when electrical goods are switched on. All of these contribute to more energy efficient buildings. Our supply partner can calculate the EPC rating of a building and advise on ways to improve this.

EPC ratings depend upon the site, location and factors such as the country the building will be in. The more the rating goes up, the more a cost and environmental benefit is added to the life-cycle of the unit. The modular system is also innovative due to stacking capabilities up to three units high. This not only helps save space in site welfare areas, but also enables tighter, smaller sites to have all the welfare they require.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Eco spec accommodation ■ Fully insulated floor, ceiling and walls ■ Double glazed windows ■ Lighting with PIR sensors ■ Heating with PIR and timers ■ Waterless features available in wet areas Toilets ■ Waterless urinal technology that uses less water than conventional toilet blocks ■ Dual flush toilets ■ Hand dryers to reduce use of paper towels ■ Non-concussive aerated taps to minimise water usage ■ PIR lighting Waste disposal and drainage For our projects hiring TSS waste tanks, TSS provides an effluent tank emptying service in conjunction with TSS toilet blocks. This means that a steel or bunded effluent tank is placed under the TSS toilet cabin. TSS can arrange waste removal using a specialised tanker fleet capable of emptying waste tanks of up to 3,000 gallons. All waste is disposed of safely and in accordance with current waste regulations. Our service provider operates over 100 tankers throughout the country and they have effluent tankers available to meet all requests. Their tankers are managed by computerised route planning and GPS vehicle tracking. Hazardous material storage Hazardous waste is defined in the European Waste Catalogue and the List of Wastes (England) Regulations 2005. Please check your local position if your project is in Scotland

or Northern Ireland. Items considered as hazardous waste are included. These include: ■ Paints, inks and resins ■ Flammable liquids

■ Asbestos ■ Oil filters ■ Fluorescent tubes

■ Contaminated packaging residues ■ Detergents containing hazardous substances ■ Batteries and discarded electrical equipment, such as TVs and computer monitors, fridges and freezers. For further information on the removal of hazardous waste, please visit: www.environmentlaw.org.uk TSS can provide a 10’ x 8’ COSHH store that comes fully bunded with air ventilation, shelving for storage and stay back doors for safety. Spill kits come as standard. If required, the option of intrinsically safe electrical lighting and heating can be added, but this will require advance notification of up to three weeks for installation. Water conservation measures Our new eco range features a unique guttering system. A narrow gutter surrounds the upper structure of the cabin and allows water to be captured. This can then flow through to a bunded water bowser and reused for irrigation or clean treated to provide flushing water for toilets.

MOBILISATION START POINT

17

MOBILISATION START POINT

TSS should be consulted at tender stage. This enables us to design the most efficient and cost effective solution. For major projects between weeks twenty six and twenty, a planned mobilisation project plan is formulated. This instigates the start-up plan and allows reviews up to the point of award status. Please note that all sites shown in this booklet are indicative of standard set-ups and sites may vary dependent on project requirements. Contract award status Once a final approach for site set-up has been agreed, project managers in liaison with TSS produce an end-to-end mobilisation plan to work to. This follows the processes outlined on page 20. If all steps within the process map are followed, the project will commence with all of the other required elements in place. A comprehensive checklist can be found on Sharepoint at: https://murphygroup.sharepoint.com/sites/intranet/specialistcentres/murphyplant If you do not have access to Sharepoint please e-mail us for a form at: totalsitesolutions@murphyplant.co.uk

THE PROCESS

How to use the time-line Throughout this guide you’ll notice the time-line. It shows thresholds, points where TSS require information to ensure mobilisation deadlines are met. A full process map can be seen on pages 21 and 22, and an overview of these thresholds shown on pages 23 and 24. Dependent on project scale (major, large, medium or small) notice requirements differ significantly. Thresholds are highlighted on the time-lines as yellow blocks. Major projects (26 weeks mobilisation and 12 weeks demobilisation) TSS should be engaged in all major project activity from tender stage. The TSS timeframe will take no longer than 26 weeks to deliver all site requirements, but early engagement will result in a better planned mobilisation. Large projects (15 weeks mobilisation and 8 weeks demobilisation) Whilst large projects are of course smaller than major, it is recommended that you liaise with TSS at tender stage. This guarantees site requirements can be comfortably met. Large projects require at least 15 weeks’ notice to ensure site delivery. Medium projects (12 weeks mobilisation and 6 weeks demobilisation) Medium projects, although only for 11 to 20 people, still require a minimum of 12 weeks’ notice. This allows accommodation and services to be on site and functional by the proposed go live date. Small projects (7 weeks mobilisation and 5 weeks demobilisation) TSS appreciate that small projects are often reactive. For site mobilisation to be right first time, it is imperative that engagement begins as early as possible. Even the smallest site set-ups require at least seven weeks’ notice to achieve successful delivery. Working together Early engagement with TSS means projects can focus on other tasks, relying upon an assured TSS service. Delivering a successfully mobilised site is a complex process and excellent pre-planning is essential. If notice periods are adhered to, TSS guarantee first-class service, right first time, and on time, every time.

SCALABLE SITE SOLUTIONS

Modular accommodation Modular options should be considered for projects that exceed more than fifty people. These are typically Tier 1 projects that exceed a two-year operational period. Delivering a premium facility of this type requires intensive planning and the mobilisation supervisor will take full control of the process. They will be assigned to oversee all operational requirements, from the initial enquiry through to completion of the project. This provides a single point of contact for each site. Unit types A variety of configurations are available dependent on the number of personnel required to man the site. The example overleaf shows a typical configuration, however much larger offices can be constructed. A number of optional extras can also be chosen including smoking shelters and security huts. Please see page 43 for details.

The requirements for each site vary dependent on its operational requirements and they will be customised to reflect these needs. These requirements will be ascertained by site surveys, factoring in ground conditions, personnel requirements, location and available space. Key time points The mobilisation point for this type of site is twenty six weeks from operational start date. TSS expects the site set-up to be achieved by week -1. Demobilisation activities must allow twelve weeks for major, eight for large, six for medium and five for small projects respectively. This ensures the most cost effective close down of site and allows for the strategic use of logistics in removal.

26

Total Site Solutions | www.murphygroup.co.uk

What ground preparations are required before delivery? Site access must be free of obstruction, allowing enough space for the vehicle delivering the temporary accommodation units. Suitable foundations or a level hard-standing area must be in place to accommodate units. It is site responsibility to prepare the ground prior to delivery and ensure that all temporary works designs are complete for both single and double stacked units. Usage of pad foundations depends on site conditions, total weight of the building and the imposed loads. Advice on foundation loads and positions can be given by TSS staff. The Project Delivery Supervisor will also advise you on these matters during a site inspection. The ground conditions over four points must withstand a minimum load of 48kN at each loading point between ground and unit contact. The the diagram below shows the ground bearing capacity and depth required to deliver a solid foundation using hardcore.

COMMUNICATIONS

Murphy IT has developed a reliable, repeatable and rapid in-house network solution, which helps deliver a standardised set of technologies and components. This technology enables users within temporary office cabins the ability to connect remotely, seamlessly and securely to all Murphy core applications, resources and files. We believe that delivering cutting edge technology as a key enabler will position the business to efficiently surpass our competitors. The ability to immediately connect site cabins to the ‘outside’ world offers significant benefits and provides future scalability.

The IT operates using Cisco Meraki, a cloud-based system with built in malware and virus protection. Its operation is automated allowing IT policies and user configurations to automatically download and be applied. The system relies on a series of hubs. These hubs are wireless, using 3G/4G for data and they communicate with each other to create a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network). Site computers connect via WiFi allowing them to access files, e-mail and perform VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) telephony. The technology optimises the type of connection it needs automatically, to ensure the best possible connection at all times.

WATER

Mains water supplies Supplying water to your accommodation is vital for compliance with welfare regulations. Applying for a direct water supply requires a minimum of 90 days application to the local water services. This solution is suitable for sites where geographical location provides viable access to the mains water supply. Construction and integration of pipelines will be required for the supply of clean water and removal of waste. Planning and civil approval is required and time must be factored in for the approval period. Should this option be unsuitable, it will be necessary to use alternative solutions such as tanked Where a site is either too small to warrant a mains supply, or is not near to a suitable water source, TSS will provide water storage facilities by use of tanks and bowsers. Water supply for toilets and other non-potable use is augmented by rain collection systems. This assists Murphy in its goal to operate more environmentally sustainable work sites. water supplies.
